Fire Island" may not deliver on the raunchy rom-com expectations, but it still manages to be an enjoyable watch thanks to its emphasis on character development and tackling issues at the heart of the gay community. The cast is strong, particularly Tomas Matos and Bowen Yang, and the film's low-key approach offers a surprise that may not be for everyone, but is worth a watch for those looking for a quieter, more contemplative comedy.

Quite generic, I must say. Of course it's nice to finally start getting cheesy rom-coms for the gays but they could've tried a bit harder with the script. Loved seeing Peppermint btw.

Swapping Pride and Prejudice bonnets for speedos, this is an empirically badly written rom-com, but there was 'just' enough warmth and heart to keep me from switching the off button.

Joel Kim Booster is good, and funny, but his characterization needed some tweaking to steer him away from full-blown See You Next Tuesday. But overall the cast is fun together, clearly invested, and it's nice to see a polished, digestible romcom without a single hetero in sight.

É louvável o que esse filme conquista como adaptação de Austen, ainda que muito dessa escolha funcione como uma referência cômica prolongada. “Fire Island” não é como o maravilhoso “As patricinhas de Beverly Hills” (dir. Amy Heckerling, 1995), que trata o romance “Emma” como uma inspiração livre para contar uma boa história sobre o presente; ele é diferente porque se engaja em reproduzir a estrutura da narrativa de Austen e das adaptações anteriores do texto em uma localização completamente nova

love the directors first movie Spa Night. They’re not that similar (spa night is much slower and delicate), but there’s a connective tissue with how well he handles delicate moments. Very funny and snappy. An easy, fun watch. Would make a good double bill with Support the Girls from a few years back.

The chemistry of the cast, specifically the two mains, is good. It's a pretty funny flick. Has a completely different energy than Driveways, which I respect. There is sincerity here, but Driveways felt so authentic and real and this comes across as just another romcom, ultimately. perhaps a little better just because the script is snappy. Maybe that's the point, but it's a much lesser film and will be washed away in the sea of films I see this year.

Better in concept than execution, but nevertheless a watchable and welcome gay film.

It’s nice that we are living in a world today where the straights don’t get all of the generic romcoms. This spin on ‘Pride & Prejudice’ gets good mileage out of the charismatic Joel Kim Booster - hopefully we see more of him soon. It moves by breezily, is always watchable and the conclusion certainly raises a smile. Unfortunately it’s hobbled by too many silly supporting characters, but it’s jolly good fun.
