The soundtrack is by far the best thing about this. The acting ranges from good to terrible often by the same actors. There is a whole lot of nothing that goes on here and I know it was going for a Taxi Driver vibe but honestly, it failed.

Fingers takes on an entirely new meaning in light of Toback's scandalous behaviour, but neither Schrader or Scorsese delved this deeply into the murky world of male psycho-sexual dysfunction. It's a gritty film of unexpected depth that's deceptively crude with disarming humour and an ear for dialogue that surely influenced Tarantino. Keitel is brilliant as Fingers, a ticking time bomb that explodes trying to bridge the gap between his dreams and obligations, reality and desire. Underrated.

Seems like a very straightforward story that ends up as a morality tale, and this simplicity is one of the charms of this otherwise hard-going and fairly indigestible movie. Another quality performance from Keitel leads us through the duality of his character and the film's temperament, at times soft and harmless, other times savage and assaultive. A demanding film that can be quite entertaining if you're in the mood for it

Jimmy (Harvey Keitel) aspires to play piano at Carnegie Hall, but his job as an enforcer for his loan-shark father (Michael V. Gazzo) stands between him and his dreams. Keitel's performance is the main attraction here, and he's fantastic as this troubled, unstable, lecherous wretch who may be his own worst enemy. It's otherwise uneven, with some good direction and powerful moments undercut by a script with too much aimless nihilism, misogynistic undertones, and a lack of focus...or of an ending.

Like a [great] combination of Five Easy Pieces and Mean Streets. If that doesn't make you want to see it, then I do not know what will.

A New Hollywood sort of movie in its style and its themes, something between early Scorsese and Five Easy Pieces, a character study with a strong cast (a big break for young Harvey Keitel in the lead) and impressive work from first time director James Toback.

Annoying protagonist. Boring.

Not easy to rate. On the one hand, it has an almost amateurish feel, but on the other hand, there is something intriguing or affecting about it. Probably need to see it again.
