I felt like this film was made just so dorks who liked FFVII, myself included, could drool over seeing familiar characters again doing cool things. That's about as deep as this movie gets, and overall my craving to point at familiar things isn't quite as strong as my desire to see movies with interesting and compelling stories.

Beautiful CGI but fan-service plot leaves anyone who didn't play FFVII in the dark. The fight scenes are a waste of time akin to that of Dragon Ball Z. After 10-15minutes of fighting someone leaves only to say "I'll get you next time!" or something equally bad. If you're a FFVII fanboy check this out. If not then it's eye-rolling boring after the visual beauty has sunk in (which takes about 5 minutes).

Absolutely dreadful garbage that only an overly apologetic fan of the franchise could eke any enjoyment out of. The visuals are great, but the story is typical Japanese RPG nonsense that fans of this sort of dreck will defend as some sort of miraculous gift from the heavens.

Decent video game cutscene, bad movie. The animation's nice and some of the action scenes are amusing in a brainless sort of way, but the truly atrocious plot is basically a thirteen-year-old's fanfiction brought appallingly to life. "Hey wouldn't it be cool if Sephiroth came back to life and Cloud beat him AGAIN?!!! AWW YEAAH!!!" Christ.

Beautifully designed and stylishly animated film is unfortunately a complete muddle in terms of its storytelling - familiarity with the source video game may help (as I come to this as a complete newbie), but little effort is made to have this stand on its own, or be accessible to newcomers. An intriguing dystopic set up soon gives way to laboured, near-senseless exposition dumps, though it does pick itself up for a rousing and exciting final half hour.

Beautifully shot (with an amazing air-fight sequence in the middle); it's too bad the plot is so convoluted. It might have made a good video game (with 40 hours to tell a story), but for a 90-min film, it's a meddlesome disaster.

Let's take a shallow RPG and turn it into a shallow CG animated movie that doesn't expand on any of the game's shallow characters or the shallow plot AT ALL. BUT, it'll be super pretty with lots of spiky hair and giant swords and over the top action scenes. Awww yeah. Or no. How about not. Nothing but terrible fanboy porn here. Steer clear if you're looking for a real movie with, you know, substance and stuff. The English dub is frickin' awful, too.

A cool followup to the popular PSone game, but if you haven't played the game, this movie is highly incomplete. The story is very weak, and merely takes you on a ride between fight sequences. For the record I have been a Final Fantasy Fanboy since I played Final Fantasy II (IV - Japan) in 1991. I have loved the series until now, eagrly anticipating FFXII.
With that aside, I cant but feel dissapointed with Advent Children. All this hype only equates to the amount of CGI the film posesses. The story is pointless and uninvolving with its purpose is to have an excuse to have a final battle. Characters have no development, and suddenly appear without explanation. Overall the movie lac

It's like a montage of video game cutscenes spliced together with no thought, care or ingenuity going into how any of them connect or form a cohesive narrative. Those looking for satisfactory payoff after the game's open ending will be sorely disappointed, as nothing you accomplished mattered since Sephiroth comes back anyway and Shinra is still around for no reason. Even the fanservice is underwhelming, with most of the cast reduced to background cameos. As such, it's a failure on all accounts.

Visually stunning with CGI that still looks better than stuff being made almost 10 years later, but this is strictly for fans of the game. The plot is a paper-thin excuse to bring Sephiroth back for one last battle, but I think it would have been better to just let the story of the original end where it did.

The untold story that happens after Final Fantasy VII. WHAT WILL HAPPEN?!? Will Cait Sith still be awesome? Yes, yes he will. Except he needed more lines!
I thought the animation in this was amazing for 2005 standards. Everything was so beautiful and the fight scenes were epic.
Sadly the story was a little weird and murky and watching it with the English dubbed lines just adds a lot of hilarity.
Some points had to be taken off for too much anime grunting. Still a pretty stylistic film.

CGI is impressive and the world is beautiful. I was glad to see the FF7 gang on board, and it definitely brings back memories. The monsters and effects were nicely done (loved it when Cloud was fighting Sephiroth). I love Aeris' scene a lot, it makes me a bit sad.
While more of a FF than The Spirit Within was (on the surface), I thought the story was pretty stale. The male leads are more on the metrosexual/emo kind, whereas I prefer more manly kinds.

It's not often you see many game-based films that end up successful based on fans, game-critics, and film-critics. What sucks though is that to those who have not played the game, FFVII, are indeed missing a well developed story. I hear from other reviewers say that the fight scenes are over the top. Need I should remind that this is an ANIME. Japanese style animation; you're very likely to see this kind of stuff, along with other "over the top" things.

Narratively the movie expects you to at least know the main conflict and resolution of FFVII but it's super ironic how it does while undermining the ending of that game then proceeding to make cringeworthy flanderizations of the entire cast. While this film is nice to look at it should've just been a short film. There's not much in the way of plot, and at one point there's a 30 minute stretch of tedious action. You can tell they were just trying to offer heaps of fan service (all of the main characters from the FFVII game are here for no real reason). The music, which should've been wonderful, featured too many hard rock and techno-y tunes. It's vaguely entertaining at times I suppose.

Advent Children is a masterpiece of animation and shows second to none skills of Square staff regarding whole set: dynamics, emotional aspects, detailed and almost perfectly crafted renderings. The fanboys who gave this movie a high score make me depressed. A movie that substitutes a good plot and characters for action and pretty graphics. Which wouldn't be bad at all, if the action was actually any good. The action is poorly choreographed and drags on for 20 minutes, in addition to seizure-inducing cinematography with said action. The fact that I counted upwards of 20 moments of deus ex machina doesn't help the film any, either.

Further, the score is great and the many action sequences are brilliantly choreographed. What remains leaves a lot to be desired. This is nothing more than a tech demo for their graphics engine. It looks pretty, sure, but so will Final Fantasy XIII. The story is garbage, the dialogue is horrible (if you watch the English dub, the voice acting is atrocious), it moves along just as if it was cutscenes taken from a game, and the narrative is awful. This is a pretty waste of time, but nothing more. Also, Jeremy Parish is right: if you don't know who most of the characters are already, the movie doesn't tell you. Trash it.
