The plot makes little to no sense, and what does make sense isn't very good. The visuals are quite stunning, and the vocal cast is loaded with talent, so the movie is easy on the eyes and the ears. But it's just so empty. Has absolutely nothing to do with Final Fantasy, and that's saying a lot for a game series where each chapter is completely unrelated. No real reason to see this other than watching a rich company bankrupt itself in the name of photo-realism. This movie killed Squaresoft.

If it wasn't for having the name "Final Fantasy" on it and being full of amazing CGI, no one would have gave a shit about this film. Uninteresting plot and boring characters makes this a waste of several millions of dollars which would have been better spent handing out cocaine to the audience, then at least they would have had a good time.

The once really amazing CGI in this movie that took hours and hours per frame to render on a massive render farm is now duplicatable in real-time.
The movie itself is solid. It's an interesting sci-fi film with a nice ending.

Really a nothing movie, only engaging for the first 10 minutes while your brain absorbs the amazing computer animation done here. After that, it's tangled up in a sea of Japanese pseudo-intellectual environmentalist mumbo-jumbo, leaving an incomprehensible plot and characters with little connection to any sort of reality. I feel embarrassed for Steve Buscemi that he did this.

Hey, Sony! How about next time you invest millions of dollars into a video game to movie project, you actually PLAY the game first, so you could... oh, I dunno.... Have SOME idea what it's about! Jeez... Regardless of content, FF:TSW is visually stunning and the voice acting is great. I think that makes up for it.

Takes bits from FF7 and FF9's storylines, and shifts them to some random sci-fi setting. Instead of, you know, a fantasy setting. And then adds characters for whom it's psychologically impossible to care any less about. Fair enough, then.

Every decision this movie makes is as unhinged as it's possible to be while still being very boring. The weirdly abstract plot, the terrible voice direction, the brown-gray-teal-orange palette, the bored facial animation - these are just the tip of the iceberg of its fractal flaws. And the technical advances everyone was impressed by at the time are used terribly, making an awful visual experience. If it was in any way an actual Final Fantasy movie, it would be more distinctive and less empty.

Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within is everything I would expect from Square trying to make a movie. It is such a contrived world (par for the course with this era FF games) that doesn't have nearly enough explanation. The direction is quite bland; maybe this worked for 90's FF games but not for a major motion picture. The animation is great for the time but there is just nothing to care about. The all-star cast sure doesn't as every single one phones it in as much as they can get away with.

Color me pleasantly surprised that this movie wasn't quite as bad as its reputation suggested. It was gorgeous to look at, and there was enough going on that I wasn't bored - even if I couldn't understand exactly WHAT was going on half the time. It's certainly worth watching for the spectacle, but the story and characters are pretty poor.

Really not as terrible as people say it is, though it does suffer from an incredibly stupid villain (an otherwise excellent James Woods) and a counterintuitive fetch-quest of a plot. It does have some scenes that have some actual suspense because it dares to have it's characters act like they're not just name on a "To Kill"-list.

Yeah, some lines were atrocious but around same level as your average sci-fi. Story feels... incomplete but it has that quasi-spiritual theme going on about Earth and Life. The graphics is still very impressive even in 2012. Some argued about the "uncanny valley" issue which did not bother me one bit.
For me, the visuals and the dream-like world alone makes it worth watching this movie.

The animation blew my mind when I first saw it, but I imagine it'd look a bit more dated upon re-watching. At times I'd actually forget I was watching an animation. The CG animation was incredibly groundbreaking at the time, unfortunately the rest of the movie didn't perform nearly as well. This movie was a stilted, disjointed mess. I'm surprised I started caring for anyone at all. It really could've benefited from a tightened up screenplay--the Phantoms are some of the most menacing villains ever and they just seem held back by a long shot. Moar focus on those! And even though it derives a its theme liberally from FF7 I can appreciate its attempts to stand on its own. They just shouldn't have spent so much time on Aki's hair. This really could've been something special.

I'd seen the other one and saw this was on TV so thought I may as well watch it. I've played little to none of the Final Fantasy games so the film didn't seem very Final Fatasylike at all from what I've seen of the games. It started off slow but then got better as it progressed. I would give this movie acclaim for one reason only. Sony actually threw money at this project not necessarily expecting to make that money back. This was more an experiment to try to push technology in digital animation to its limits. And even thought the characters at times appear to be puppet-like, I still can't help but appreciate the effort and countless hours that must have been spent in creating this film, and not all just to turn a quick buck.

Should also mention that I hate the games, and I guess I'd be bothered by it if I liked them.
