Fellowship of the Frog

1959
Suspense/Thriller, Crime
1h 29m
Both Scotland Yard and an amateur American sleuth are tracking a master criminal known as The Frog. This moniker refers to the bulging-eyed mask worn by the evildoer, and is reflected by the frog icons painfully tatooed onto the forearms of his henchmen. The trail leads to the country manor of an enigmatic, steely-eyed nabob, whose repressed son has eyes for the artistes at the Lolita cabaret, and whose lovely daughter captures the fancy of both the American playboy and the villain himself. Done before the infamous "Der Hexer", this movie is better arranged and produced than the former. However, it is not as funny as "Der Hexer", it's more serious.

The first of the Krimi films isn't one of the best, but it's still reasonably enjoyable.

While the movie has its charme, the overall mystery is illogical and the ending just comes out of nowhere. If you have never seen a German Edgar Wallace classic, this one is fine but it won't have you asking for more.

This first Rialto Edgar Wallace Krimi took me a couple of attempts to finish, and it was mainly due to trying to view it too late in the evening. This one still feels like a test run for the formula that they would perfect later on. It’s too heavy on plot, characters and dialogue and lacks the pure fun of the later entries, but it is handsomely shot on B/W and includes the actors who would star in many of the later films like Fuchsberger, etc.
