Hawks's tragic love story chronicles anguishing and still contemporary communication issues between West and East, and often shines through its depiction of violence -- there is blood, and there is murder -- and its mesmerizing and improved portrait of a woman trying to love -- but mostly to mantain her freedom and her identity as a free individual. The sequence in which Fazil sees his lover for the first time -- the girl who's going to hear him say I love you only in the end -- is pure beauty.
