So anguishingly realistic, it’s more a drama than comedy. Only funny in the sad little ways life is often funny. But no rib aching laughter, just bottomless sympathy for poor Spencer Tracy. And wishing he would be more assertive. Amazing costumes.

They didn't change much for the Steve Martin version. Luckily, he only had to spend $85 on an orchestra. That's a steal. Wait, what are you trying to tell me about inflation?

Pretty frothy stuff, but given surprising weight by Spencer Tracy's measured, thoughtful performance. The nightmare sequence is a brief, inspired bit of lunacy - even more so than Minnelli's most unhinged moments, it reminded me of Powell and Pressburger.

Fluffy light comedy. Tracy brings it up a notch but can't overcome the horrid conformity and gloss.

Ah, the marriage business. A nightmare for any old fashioned parent, perfectly illustrated by that nightmare sequence and all the other wedding cliches that make the road to that joyous day hell on earth. Often delightful, but also with every other feeling planing a wedding creates, greatly enhanced by Spencer Tracy and the beautifully naive Elizabeth Taylor as his daughter. A pure family picture.

classic hijinks cinema. A game Spencer Tracy plays a put-upon father who secretly grieves the process of losing his only girl, played by Elizabeth Taylor, to marriage. As the costs and complexity mounts, the verbal hijinks do as well. Nothing too enlightening or incisive, but an all around solid family pic,

Pretty charming as a snapshot of 1950s marriage and wedding culture, though ultimately a weak Best Picture nominee.

O Pai da Noiva estreava há 70 anos nos EUA. Com Minnelli não tem erro, além de ser uma deliciosa comédia e Tracy estar espetacular, é um poderoso retrato de uma era das relações de gênero dentro do patriarcado burguês. BlurayRip no MakingOff.

Spencer Tracy + Liz Taylor is the peak of cinema.

Vincente Minnelli's classic comedy of the shenanigans surrounding a bourgeois American wedding, with the exasperated father (Spencer Tracy) struggling against the mounting scope and expense. For my taste, there's just not much to it; it's not incisive or endearing enough to overcome all the petty grousing. Minnelli's direction does have some nice touches (especially the nightmare sequence), and the cast is solid, but the Oscar nominations for Picture and Screenplay are headscratchers today.

I love Joan Bennett in everything, even in this understanding role. Of course I cannot stand Spencer Tracy, but he manages not to ruin this one. And young Liz is rather radiant.

A relic. An entertaining relic (because all those involved are talented) but a relic none the less. Hard not to watch it and think, "Wow, having a wedding in 1950 was actually pretty simple. What's this guy complaining about?"

A bland drama about a cranky father dealing with his daughter's wedding. Essentially you are watching Spencer Tracy act like a selfish baffoon because he doesn't like his future son-in-law and can't handle the stress holding a big wedding.

Far superior to the remake, Spencer Tracy gives a convincing, honest performance as the overwhelmed father reluctant to marry his daughter away.

For a comedy...it's not really that funny! I tended to just be annoyed by the paranoia of Spencer Tracy's character. Also, who gave Elizabeth Taylor that hairstyle? It's incredibly ugly.

tracy and taylor do great jobs in what turns out to be an almost laugh a minute movie. even the remake wasn't bad and that's just a testament to how good this one was. it's a simply adorable comedy that has an exquisite script and some amazing acting.

Tracy is wonderful as the father (what facial expressions!), and Elizabeth Taylor is very beautiful and appealing.
