A classic "went in expecting rubbish but walked out with a smile" movie. Interesting casting here. Douglas? Perfect. The guy just looks like a sleazeball. Always does. Close? It pains me to speak ill of a fellow Mets fan, but I don't think Lyne did a solid enough job presenting her as someone to inspire instant infatuation. Archer is way cuter and sassier. Maybe it's because I've never cheated or even had the urge to despite some...uhhh, let's wrap this up. This is a lot of trashy, 80s fun.

Bizarre fact: This was the worldwide highest grossing film of 1987. Can you imagine something like that happening today? It would be like, I dunno, Red Sparrow or something being the highest grossing film of 2018. Anyway, the movie is yuppie trash but kinda fun and watchable in a slightly-elevated-soap opera way, although Glenn Close is somewhat weird casting for this supposed erotic sexpot role; guess Sharon Stone or Kim Basinger didn’t pick up the phone.

I think this movie started a whole new late 21st century genre of thriller based in a world where you could no longer trust anyone...and not in the Hitchockian way. This is truly disturbing...and...I believe happens in real life more often than we want to discuss.

Ultra-lame 'erotic' thriller for the unwashed masses. Ideal horror storyline for right-wing assholes fed on 24 hour news stations in constant fear of outsiders and anyone calling them on their own bullshit. A rich white guy cheats on his wife and bangs a stranger and we're supposed to feel sorry for HIM when she wants payback when he treats her like crap? It should have ended like all good exploitations do, the jerk gets a knife to the gut and the wronged woman drives happily into the sunset.

A horrifying parable of the cheating man. The most confusing about this film was when Close and Douglas kept splashing each other with water while they were having sex. Is this a thing? Have I been doing it wrong?

A good, but not great, film. What stands in this film's way is it's failure to explore the reasons why Douglas' character chooses to have an affair in the first place. After all, how can we accept the film's conclusion, an affirmation of faith in the bonds of matrimony, if we don't fully understand what challenged those bonds in the first place? Still, it's an exciting thriller and Close's portrayal of the psychotic spurned lover is excellent: equal parts frightening and empathizable.

Dated. Basic Instinct pretty much made this redundant. Not only was it more violent and daring and formally inventive, it presented an ambiguous perspective on sexuality and desire (and its relationship to violence) by probing into male fears of female sexuality in a way that simultaneously validated and mocked them. F.A is conservative by comparison. Close is just a spurned obsessive love who wants revenge and Douglas' infidelity isn't even questioned, at least not in the theatrical cut.

On the grand scale of Michael Douglas erotic thrillers with dated sexual politics, this is much worse than 'Basic Instinct' and a tad better than 'Disclosure'. A lot of it is very well-shot and here's a sort of attempt to take the main character to task (mostly from a police lieutenant deadpan enough to belong in a funnier movie), but Close is only given sub-'Baby Jane' material to work with and the climax is... well, that gun on the mantelpiece sure gets fired, huh.

A horror movie applied over an infidelity plot gives us a monster whom, unlike in Jurassic Park or Jaws, you could very possibly encounter. This monster actually exists in real life-- the human stalker. Tension is maintained constantly, and the absence of a prolonged marital spat is wise, because it presents a "false solution" into the plot, which of course gets defeated by Glenn Close. Superb, non-wordy, and fun, unless you have been screwed up by gender politics so that you can't see straight.

This is a fairly decent thriller film, with tense and unsettling moments. The ending felt a little abrupt but the performances were good. There are both better and worse thrillers around. There’s a stark shift halfway through Fatal Attraction where it ceases to be a nuanced piece about adultery and Alex morphs into an outright horror villain, which is down to audience-appeasing rewrites that Close fought passionately against. These changes undoubtedly make it a lesser film, as the unfaithful party is indemnified by the spurned lover’s psychotic behaviour and protection of the family unit becomes all that matters. It’s gripping entertainment either way, and the acting is great.

From a feminist's point it's such an interesting tale of how male and female codes are blending and how the society tries to fit everything into boxes. In Fatal Attraction there are no gender-rules. You can be male, female - or in Glenn Close's case, both. I actually think that the cinema of the 80's were brave in their choice of masculine female leads; like Daryl Hannah in Wall Street.

For Dan Gallagher (Michael Douglas), life is good. He is on the rise at his New York law firm, is happily married to his wife, Beth (Anne Archer), and has a loving daughter. But, after a casual fling with a sultry book editor named Alex (Glenn Close), everything changes. Jilted by Dan, Alex becomes unstable, her behavior escalating from aggressive pursuit to obsessive stalking. Dan realizes that his main problem is not hiding his affair, but rather saving himself and his family.

Glenn Close, the bunny boiler herself, queen of the scorned, steals scenes with a face that is a mixture of fear, intensity and the disconcerting beginnings of a smile. Her unhinged character undoubtedly kept many a man's wandering eye firmly placed on their doting wife, even if she does give a vacant goldfish stare when answering the phone, "hello, hello".

I was trying to decide how many points to deduct for the absurd background motivation, the 'victim' being such an asshole, or the predictable script, and in the end I just didn't. I found the thrills too effective, thanks to excellent manufactured tension by Lyne, and a brilliant (if hyperbolic) villain portrayed by Glenn Close. If I'm going to watch a cliche-filled horror movie with overly-simplistic characters, it might as well put those characters and cliches to good use.

I can review this movie two ways. (1) The superb performance and commendable direction are dampened by a middling, predictable screenplay. Or (2) What would be a completely unoriginal by-the-book thriller manages to very watchable thanks to those things. Choose depending on level of pessimism.

"Fatal Attraction" is a strong, above-average thriller, intensely directed by Adrian Lyne and featuring solid performances, especially that of Glenn Close as the paranoid Alex. Sadly, the finale is underwhelming at best, as it is pathetically telegraphed and predictable, bogging down the final result. The most unpleasant thing about it is that it was actually re-shot after test screenings, where viewers thought the original ending, that had Alex committing suicide, was not "cathartic" enough.

Wildly overrated, this glossy updating of the far superior _Play Misty for Me_ has a knockout performance from Close and a quietly effective one from Archer (as the betrayed wife who, not unexpectedly, emerges as the film's hero) but tries too hard to drum up sympathy for Douglas's basically pretty jerky husband -- who doesn't get nearly what he deserves -- and has too many obvious horror-suspense setups.
