As a fan of history and this particular era (especially the later Napoleonic), it is nice to see characters and stories come to life, especially different perspectives. The costuming, casting and atmosphere are well done. Lea Seydoux continues to mesmerize whenever she is on screen and I look forward to more of her work. I was curious enough to inquire after the book, from which the movie is based, after watching it.

More of a fascinating study of obsession than a detailed examination of the fall of Marie Antoinette. Great performances, and quietly rapturous.

It doesn't quite go beyond surface level examination but by juxtaposing the grandeur with the squalor, the elegance with the ugliness, and by relegating the oft-told significant events to the background as witnessed only by an observant commoner via second hand accounts, the film attains a sense of rivetingly chaotic versimilitude.

a completely different aspect of the French revolution, a bit dull but still high quality

Well done boredom. The result was as dull as the life of upper class 18th Century people could have. Léa Seydoux shined but I could survive without.

Eeeeh, this is the kind of lavish, awkwardly staged productions I'm used to seeing broadcasted on french television so I was surprised to see this one receive the cinematic treatment. Its content may be striving for authenticity and the actors fully invest themselves in their respective roles but I was continuously looking for that spark that would lift the film off its feet and subdue my irrepressible boredom.
