Fantômas - À l'ombre de la guillotine

It's entertaining enough but I didn't get as into it as I would've liked. Serials have to really hook me to get me to keep watching.

(Rating and review apply to entire series.) A predictable but still enjoyable excursion into the distant past of cinema. While not all sensibilities of the era have lasted, there is a certain suspense and uneasiness that is impressive even today.

Rating for all parts of series. This isn't quite as good as Les Vampires, but if you like one you'll probably like the other. A similar feel and a lot of similar ideas (mastermind criminal organizations, outrageous crimes, silly fun plots, some goofy fun set-pieces, etc.) The restoration I saw of this, from 2013, was astounding--it looked like true HD. Watch Les Vampires first and if you like that, give this a whirl.

Though it's a very standard crime story riddled with outlandish and illogical plot devices, it's remarkably well put together considering its age. Fun characters and one or two bold stylistic flourishes make it an amusing watch.

Unsuspenseful but short. There are a couple of camera tricks.

In regards to the entire series: It's wonderful seeing such early filmmakers construct the language of cinema with new tools, and while Fantomas falls apart in its final two segments, it offers plenty of genuinely suspenseful, and often shocking, narrative hiccups.

The pacing often feels stagnant, like many pieces from the era, but it's fun enough. Fantomas is a dick.

Simplistic, a little too fast paced and far from great, but the story was entertaining enough to keep me interested for its short run-time.

Surprisingly decent early crime film. The acting is pretty good for its time, and albeit simple, it's enjoyable, and not just for its historical value.

Like most silent serials the pacing can be a bit hard to get used to but it has some nice twists and turns in the plot and interesting characters.
