This automatically draws comparisons with Bava's Diabolik, another 60’s supervillain flick, and sadly it doesn’t reach that level. It’s more old fashioned, not as “hip” and some of the humor is too silly for my taste. Fantomas himself is cool and deserved more screen time as most attention is given to the journalist and commissioner who are less interesting. Production values are high, especially the secret lair and there’s an impressive chase towards the end with changing means of transport.

Jean Marais, who played The Beast in Jean Cocteau's classic BELLE ET LA BETE (which was itself shamelessly ripped off and dumbed down for the DisCorp version) here plays both hero and villain in a flashy '60s caper picture filled with confused identities and frenetic chases. Marais performs some really eye-opening stunts that appear to be genuinely dangerous.
