The ending seems to wrap things up too neatly, however the rest of the movie more than makes up for this. A groovy music score, amazing visuals, and a good story. A cool gem that any fan of animation would, at the least, appreciate.

This is one of the weirdest pieces that I've ever seen, which is both a good and a bad thing. Combining some strange ideas with some of the wierdest plotlines and warped, simplistic animation reminissent of something out of Monty Python, the film seems to have a general intent to produce a unique experience. That said for me the formula doesn't really work all that well and lacks any real kind of substance or story, making Fantastic Planet little more than a strange psychadelic curiosity.

Completely weird. Very cool little gem. The music screams early 70's: a groovy mix of Ummagumma-style Pink Floyd and the kind of jazz/funk you might hear in 70's porn. My description sounds cheesy, but it's really good and it adds an awful lot. It almost makes up for the rather slapdash animation, which is surely the film's biggest weakness.

The animation technique is elaborate (detailed shading, extensive use of focus and parallax shifts) but looks better in stills than in motion. Might have been served better by a short rather than feature, but admittedly the film is unique and compelling largely due to glacial pacing and extensive bestiary, both of which would be right out the window if its length were, say, halved. And shorts have a history of falling into obscurity or outright unavailability, which no good film deserves.

I saw this as a child and it totally distorted my creative thinking process for the entirety of my life. I think there is a moral, or a political commentary in here somewhere, but enjoy it for the bizarre imagery, people getting eaten like ants and other horrific aspects.

Amazing visuals and music, almost the very definition of 70s psychedelia sci-fi weirdness. A rather flimsy plot and ending are made up for by these otherwise groovy elements.

The animation is rather simplistic but if you can get past that, you will see that this is a disturbing and memorable movie. Though personally I think that the movie works because of the simplistic animation. Still, I'll knock it down 5 points for the animation.

A very interesting film with a strange and occasionally disturbing artistic style. It has some interesting insights and gives you something to think about, although the presentation in the film is a little over simplified. It's still engaging and the visual experience alone is enough to make it worthwhile, even if the animation itself is pretty weak.

I find myself more invested in its concept than execution. Comes off like it didn't want to make the Ohms hapless against the Draags when that framing is what makes its premise fascinating. In the halfway point it becomes less about the dichotomy of condescending power and self-autonomy within an unequal relationship and more a battle against an oppressor, which is really lame. The way it lands on its conclusion is a massive asspull and they just forget Tiwa exists losing a lot narrative weight.

This movie was a complete random find whilst me and my partner trudged through websites looking for movies. We originally picked it because of its odd poster and the reviews. I DID NOT REGRET IT!!! This movie is great all the way through, from the music to the obviously old jagged animation, it all comes together to make this awesome movie thats just so much fun to watch. Without sounding too pretentious, i think its pretty clear the message was animal cruelty. 90/100 would watch again.

A very interesting, strange, unique film that isn't quite like anything else. The animation style is different, but I didn't love it. The score adds a ton, though, and fits the film perfectly. It's wildly creative in the kind of way where you figure the creators must have been high as a kite while conceiving it, but is a little on the slow side. Unlike anything else you'll see. Recommended.

I am obviously going against popular opinion here based on the ratings I see but I didn't really like this. I didn't like the animation or the artwork. I thought that the soundtrack was the best part but usually it didn't fit the film. The story was okay but nothing all that special or interesting. I am not the biggest fan of French cinema and this was so overhyped that I've held off from watching this for a long time, now finally having watched it, well I think my initial impression held true.

A fantastic fantastic tale of little and big humans! Creative animation with psychedelic music makes this one a really out of this world film. It has aged pretty well even though you can feel (and appreciate) the retro-futurism of 70s. Thematically maybe not the strongest, especially with all the potential of the story line given, but still manages to offer some food for thought. Enjoyable and and part of general education!

Some interesting animation paired with a hackneyed brand of freshman English dystopian sci-fi that I maybe could have found naively charming if this was based on a victorian novel. Populating your fictional world with Dr. Seuss flora and fauna doesn't make 'can't we all just get along' a more interesting theme.

It's a fairly straightforward allegory about the abuse of power, particularly targeting our casual disregard for the welfare of other species, but Topor's artwork is the real draw. There's really no film that looks (or sounds given it's psychedelic jazz score) anything like this.

What I love about this movie, apart from how gorgeous it is, is its anthropological eye, which makes the human Oms seem just as strange and interesting as the alien Draags. It also means that what could have been a heavy-handed morality play becomes a study in how the Oms are able by a demonstration of strength to emancipate themselves, without making the Draags seem exceptionally malicious.

Interesting imaginative work and commentary. I wouldn't say the animation was great, but I still kinda liked it. Some of the world-building was good, but it could have been better if so much time wasn't taken to be deliberately weird. I was impressed most with how successfully vermin-like the humans were often portrayed. If the Draags hadn't brought it on themselves, I'd feel bad about their infestation problem.

There is some very creative imagery used here, especially for a lot of the alien creatures. In the English dub I watched, the voice acting was mostly really flat, but in a weird way, I felt like that worked in the movie's favor. It made me feel like I was watching a historical documentary about a time period where photos and video footage could not possibly exist. I know that's usually associated with low-budget made-for-public-TV programs, but I really thought it complemented this movie.

The illustrations and animations are very poor. Audio and narration is quite boring. Music is really bad 70's style disco and lame sci-fi. The pace is excruciatingly slow. The story is clunky and slow. I somehow managed to watch the entire movie, but looking back now can't figure out how. I guess I really wanted to find some reason to like this.
