Falling in Love

A must watch due to the two leads, Falling in Love is better than its reputation. This is quite sad and pretty down-to-earth in a way that 80s romance movies were not. New York is in full frame and it is great to see these two walk around in it.

Dreary, bland romance does at least warrant some interest for Streep/De Niro completists, however both actors are given precious little to do (though Wiest and Keitel in support fare even worse); the actors themselves also share virtually no romantic chemistry with each other, and the screenplay develops the story along the gloomiest line imaginable, until a strange cop-out of an ending. Dave Grusin's very 80s score (reminiscent of TOOTSIE) provides the only element of comparative merit.

De Niro comes off as a weird creeper, and the whole thing is just a boring mess. The chemistry between the two leads is non-existent.

Disturbingly bad. What's even grosser is that this came on the heels of both of their second Oscars.

_Brief Encounter_ it's not, but De Niro and especially Streep lift it out of the ordinary.

Christ, this is ridiculous. One of several movies in which De Niro demonstrates that he can't pass himself off as a normal person to save his sorry ass (at least in a non-boring way). In the scenes where he's kissing Streep, he looks like he's eating her

Completly forgettable.
