In which sex has been so thoroughly depersonalized and commodified that the characters can only reckon with it as a transaction, as consumers, instead of an expression of real, raw desire. When Bill is confronted with explicit evidence of this unspoken reality, it horrifies him, but he's every bit as complicit in this new social dynamic as the masked figures he fears. Kubrick's best film.

Kubrick's best and great performances by all concerned. A perfect film in that nothing has been left to chance; everything is more than it seems and intentional. A vivid, dreamy dissection of sex, money, social relations, and power in modern Babylon. Structural sociology and Lacan. The laws of hierarchy built upon the death and commodification of women and queers. Cruise's fragile masculinity breaking down until he achieves recognition. Where does it leave marriage? Harder to tell.

Just rewatched for the first time in 20 years. I either didn’t get it as a kid or was just in the right mood now because I just melted into the mood of it all. The psychosexual drama may be the film’s brains but its guts are found in its secret societies, mystery and subtle but haunting terror. For a movie I hadn’t seen since 2000 so many scenes were immediately familiar, which says something. I love how the film doesn’t explain everything, let your darkest imagination fill in details.

Epitome of post-modern pretention, the film goes nowhere SLOOOW. I did love watching Cruise&Kidman talk about what a learning experience making the film was after the fact, in order to justify being taken off the market for 2+ years by this lethally dull forary into "porn". The critical acclaim heaped on this only illustrates what a bunch of kiss-ass sycophants many critics are when one of their beloved "masters" is at the helm. Take Kubrick's name off & they would yawn like the rest of us.

(2nd viewing) 6 or 7 years since I've last seen it, and this is indeed an underappreciated film from Kubrick. This film about obsession and commitment works on so many levels, it plays with ones mind and the cinematography may be his best after 'Barry Lyndon'. Add some mesmerizing music and comic reliefs and you've got something for the books. Kidman wasn't nearly as good as Cruise, who was very likeable in this film. In the words of Jack Nicholson: Stan's the Man.

Wow, a Tom Cruise film I can actually appreciate, but we got Kubrick to thank for that. Eyes Wide Shut is a extremely surreal look into the marriage of a rich, sophisticated family, and the sexual desires of both, but more focused on Cruise. This is a very different side of Kubrick. He did explore the theme of sexual obsession before in Lolita, but this film is quite different and unique. It is really lifelike, and has a memorable score to back things up. Great ending to a great career.

About the imprint of sex on the ego rather than the loins. People are compelled by social and biological constructs toward companionship, but still it's impossible for one to fathom the depths of another's heart. Subconscious motifs are codified in the film's illusory, hypnotic, slightly uncanny fashions and gestures. The casting of superstar couple Cruise and Kidman is a significant metatext, and being Kubrick's final film has inspired a unique level of scrutiny. This movie is extraordinary.

Stanley Kubrick's misunderstood masterpiece. Everything about this is so deep, it's just such a densely thematic character study. It's probably the least erotic/thrilling movie about sex ever made, but it's so masterfully and purposefully done. I can't say enough good about this movie, it's so unfairly maligned. My absolute favorite Kubrick film, I think history will eventually start to look on this as his crowning achievement.

A pinky-up peep show that plays like a response to Blue Velvet and incorporates more deliberate hand-acting than Dune. Honest, the amount of exaggerated body language and gesticulation in this movie verges on comedy. By the end you'll want to reach into the screen, grab Sydney Pollack's wrists and just tell him to chill out with those pool balls but you can't, for you are only a sideline voyeur.

Unforgettable scenes. As in: BURNED INTO MY PSYCHE. If I have any qualms about Eyes Wide Shut, it's the lack of what Barenboim would describe in music as, "The silence is louder than the sound," where a film finishes and the art experience is amplified at the credits--like an orgasmic pulse, or the rush of hypnopompia--as you re-enter reality from disassociation. La petite mort.

Like other Y2K-era films, this explores a hero gaslighted about his reality. However, unlike 2001 or The Shining's treatment of that theme, Kubrick missteps here. The jealousy plot doesn't fit the character's ages. And the underworld parts mistake slow with suspense. It's so oddly constructed I've wondered if Kubrick's untimely death impacted the final production. Still, it has a dreamy soft light look & performances that benefit from the exhaustive takes. Recommended for the director's fans.

for all of Kubrick's talent, this is really little different than Joe Ezterhas's schlock of the early 90's. Tom Cruise stumbles upon a secret cabal of masked individuals who have vanilla sex with identical supermodels. it's a puritanical story about a man who learns to love sex with his married wife. and the London studio replica New York looks off; artificial, fake and lacking the sleazy grime that would mesh so well with the themes of seduction. so much for Kubrick's attention to detail.

A slow burn, hypnotising and subtly unsettling. It's funny how, at a younger age, the mansion scenes have such a different impact. "Whoa, dude, boobies! Everywhere!!" instead of "Whoa, dude, what a fascinating nightmarish scenario". A wonderful if low-key mix of sex, death, jealousy and paranoia, and a visual treat to boot. A shame Cruise seems a bit wooden and Kidman was pretty uneven.

A fairly successful examination of male fantasy/desire. This is beautifully filmed. Certainly an odd film. Everything seemed to be delivered in a very controlled and deliberate manner. The settings had a touch of the otherworldy about them. Human interactions seemed almost dreamlike. The net result was a compelling, curious experience, with a subtle undercurrent of dread and unease. Watching it made me feel like I'd been up all night for some reason...

Its a nice erotic familly drama of sophisticated and rich couple and their attempts to bring monotony out of their marriage.. and thats it, nothing more to it.. Of course piano soundtracks and intensity of certain scenes are brilliant, those scenes are the only one that give you that awesome feeling of watching a Kubrick's movie :)

Stanley Kubrick films are very much like onions. They're appealing to look at on the surface and have many layers. For example, in this film, Tom Cruise's character has a number of unique facades that he shows people depending on the situation - he's a doctor to his patients, a father to his daughter, a husband to his wife, a douchebag to people trying to have a party, etc. Maybe a matryoshka doll would be a better comparison, but those don't make me cry like onions and Kubrick films do.

Sexual desires not consumed, horny female dreams, frustrating encounters that every man would kill to have -- two models willing to get laid at the same with him, a woman kissing him and telling she's in love, a hooker picking him up, the greatest orgy of all times, with the benefit of seeing just masks. In the best career finale of the 20th century, Kubrick states that, despite the beauty of poetry, fiction and dreams, people need to -- you know, need to fuck. Best Christmas movie ever.

Kubrick's final film is an engrossing, hypnotizing exploration of infidelity and sexual longing. Highly metaphorical, it demands much but if you're able to give then you'll find something wonderful. The acting (surprisingly) works, the orgy scene is nerve wracking, the music is used wonderfully, and the cinematography is amazing: pastel tans and browns contrasted with neon reds and blues. One final masterpiece from a legendary filmmaker.

EWS is probably Kubrick's strangest film and it's difficult to sum up what it's exactly about. It's a statement about the lurking taboo sexuality hidden beneath society's surface, marital infidelity, and corruption of wealth. It's surreal and beautiful to look at but a bit melodramatic at times overall it's still an interesting Kubrick film. It's also amusing to see Tom Cruise get blue-balled every 30 minutes when he tries to cheat.

A complex moral tale about the allure of lust, the mistrust that rises to the surface when we mask our true selves, and the many ways that sex works its way into our psyches in the modern world. Kubrick's cinematography never fails to dazzle making use of diffuse, dreamlike lighting and a camera that's constantly in motion around the characters. Excellent film all around.

Brilliantly directed. Kubrick's smooth steady cam work, great eye for composition, beautiful use of colors and shapes, and pitch perfect music choices are all as good here as with any of his other films. I also have to give props to Tom Cruise. Besides Magnolia, this is the best acting of his career. So what's the movie actually about? What was real and what was a dream? What does it all mean? Sort of an uneven film, with a bit of an uninspiring start, but the Doctor's journey throughout the mansion full of masks was amazing. IMO, it's not a masterpiece, but it is a fascinating little enigma. The viewer is left to sort out which parts are real and which parts are a dream, or somewhere in between, or if it should even be thought of in those terms. Any film that leaves so much room for interpretation is at least worth thinking about. And the cinematography is, as one expects from Kubrick, phenomenal. What brings EWS down most of all is the acting. Let's not kid ourselves, Cruise and Kidman are awful in this movie.

A man, on encountering his wife's exposure of her desire, starts to wonder what he might have missed out on women's wildness, only to realise that an answer can't be pursued outside of their adventuring together. The dialogue at the end suggests that the central question for a clear understanding of the film is: what's the truth that's worth caring about - the "truth" of the sexual privilege of the rich and powerful, or the truth of how we survive and bi-fuck-ate all that wildness inside us?

The old adage, "everything is about sex, except sex, which is about power," perfectly sums up the theme of this film. The plot and characters are secondary. It's signature Kubrick in that it's entirely thematic, with the theme being the constant shift between sex and power. Don't read much more into it. It's purposefully primal. It's not terribly riveting, but it's interesting and well written. It plays like a late 19th-century tragedy, like Wilde or Maugham. A bit redundant, but well made.

I hope they did it on purpose to make all of this eroticism not sexy, else that would be embarrassing. Could this be Kubrick's greatest film? His first and only "normal" movie, as opposed to horror, or period, or sci-fi. A wonderfully simple structure allows us to follow Cruise's character through a single night and morning of emotional upheaval and rebirth. Not sure if it was the whole script, just the dialogue, the acting, or a combo of all 3, but a lot of the lines seemed bland and goofy contrasting the tone which was excellently set by Kubrick's camerawork. The slowness was good for letting us get caught up in the situation with Cruise, but that also made the very long run get felt. Undoubtably a great film, but the first viewing left me at least as puzzled as its main characters. While the ending showed the key to the whole film, and studying Kubrick supplied me with directions (like two party's that work as one), the only obvious hidden narrative consists of color coding. Needless to say that can't be everything. All the parts need to work in favour of the relationship/eroticism between Kidman and Cruise, but most of the film is guesswork. Requires a rewatch.

To view this as an erotic thriller is to really miss the boat. What I love most about the movie is that way the plot and the atmosphere are so surreal, but the motivations and psychology feel completely genuine. Told in vignettes, it embraces non-structure and instead focuses on the development of mood and the idea of sexual and emotional validation. It's one of Kubrick's loosest, and therefore one of his most engaging films. It's open and warm--Kubrick's least distant film--evocative in its use of color and lighting, and the standard thriller elements play with the characters in such a provocative, almost subversive way. Sets out to deconstruct married life, but ends up more like a male infidelity fantasy, and even though Cruise for the most part is brilliant in the lead, his character is simply too introvert to connect to on any higher level than "he's confused (and horny)". That said, there's no denying that Kubrick is one of the greatest visual directors ever, here creating an almost surreal nocturne thriller. EWS cracks institution of marriage and the bonds of fidelity to uncover the monster lurking in the shadows, namely bestial lust. Nobody is giving their best performance here and sometimes the sleepwalking/dreamlike vibe does just veer over into the bad kind of slow but when this movie is firing on all cylinders it’s so intense and spellbinding. Men are so insecure lmao

It didn't impress me very much. I guess the movie and it's story was shocking when it came out 10 years ago, but nowadays it looks pretty boring. It's slow paced and seeing Kidman's titties every 10 minutes gets dull too.

I'd agree with Criminal5. Really wasn't expecting to like this quite as much as I do. Kubrick once again proved that he's really fucking bold, making a movie this sexual, this daring and releasing it to the mainstream. Beautiful cinematography, a great pace, fantastic acting, a scary/emotional main piano theme and a wonderful script make this a brilliant swansong.
