That cover poster is just atrocious. It looks like a b-side from the Last House on the Left remake, and the words might as well read, "WILL CURE CANCER" in order to properly give you the most unrealistic expectations. This isn't a terrible movie, or even a bad remake, or even a terrible entry in the Evil Dead series. This right here is an mp3 player compared against the '81 original's record player. Obviously that mp3 player is better in every imaginable facet. Too bad vinyl still sounds better.

I thought this was pretty decent. The big complaint I have here is that the characters are mostly unengaging. Campbell played the only engaging character in the original trilogy, but his presence was massive and I never got that with anyone in this. It’s really well directed, and all of the practical effects and imagery are truly spectacular and make this worth viewing. I enjoyed the ending a lot as well, I just didn’t get scared. I prefer the campy originals, but this is still decent.

As soon as the "bro" pulls a plastic cock ring from the ear of his sister; which i'm sure will have some symbolic meaning later you know this remake is going to be trash. Forget the film's banal white suburbanite bobblehead chatter for a sec, this 40 score is for the effects which are decent. Otherwise this is a great big heaping pile of dogshit with lackluster build up, scares, and corny dialogue. It follows the usual "woods" formula without any of the grit of the original. Crap actors too.

If you are a fan of the Evil Dead series like I am, you will enjoy this. If you are turned off by idiot characters getting maimed for stupid reasons, you will not enjoy this. I'll admit it doesn't have the charm that the originals do, but everything else is satisfying, especially the spectacular ending sequence. I can't quite put my finger on it, but when possessed demons split their tongue in two with rusty knives, I 'm oddly aroused. Don't judge me.

Full disclosure: I don't hold the original Evil Dead in the high emotional regard that many fanboys do. So this film, which doesn't really have any sense of fun, didn't hit me as hard. The final fight scene is cool (albeit gory). However, the rest of the picture is uninspired to the point of self-parody. Instead it falls back on familiar tropes, like having the black person die first. A marginal recommendation for some okay jump scares and good teenage fun.

A plodding slog through the plot points of the original movie, without a shred of cleverness, humor or fun. It's essentially indistinguishable from any number of modern day horror flicks, featuring a herd of pretty actors with zero personality being fed one by one into the meat grinder. Strengths of Raimi's original film were the cinematography and sound design, but these elements are pretty nondescript here. The score is almost entirely for the (admittedly excellent) practical gore effects.

Very self-contained: succinct, straightforward, and extremely violent. There's a bit of typical horror-movie idiocy on the part of the characters, but on the flip side you have [spoilers] a woman sawing her own arm off because, did you see that fucking demon infection? It had to go. I can't at all compare it to the originals, but it's a good time on its own.

So, so close to being better than the original one. The book of the dead was more interesting than most of the characters. Excellent remake manages to best the original in many ways, thanks to a bigger budget, likable performances and even a certain hew to logic; the "cold turkey" dry-out is a pretty good reason for keeping everyone at the death-trap cabin. Once the gore starts, Alvarez does nothing by halves achieving a discomforting intensity using his buckets (and buckets) of blood, while simultaneously turning up the heat just enough to give everything an absurdly comic tone. A surprising, harrowingly good time!

A Evil Dead movie without a Campbell or Sam Raimi? This sounded awful, and I had no faith in it, being one of the biggest fans of these two. I went into it with the lowest expectations, and while it's not in the same ball park as the originals, there is a lot of fun to be had. It's visually gory, extremely campy, and it's dark humor is there. Fede did a great job, but I'm sorry, I miss Ashy Slashy and his chainsaw. This film doesn't have a single good character to get behind.

Surprisingly decent but not really good. There's nothing outright comedic about it but turns the generic horror stuff to such an extreme it almost achieves the absurd comic undertone although lacks the necessary joy. Does its own thing with partial success but encumbered by lame modern horror trends. Reverential to the original but lacks its charm. Kinda admirable how it tries to establish some serious drama about addiction but in the end it's Evil effin Dead so it doesn't really go anywhere.

Zombie-like in its crude plagiarism not only of Raimi's ingenious Evil Dead 1-2 but also of The Exorcist and canonical slasher and zombie flicks, this reboot is virtually indistinguishable from most horror cinema of our time: Its makers were so busy cramming in as many cliches as they could muster, that they never stopped to notice how idiotic (and not just banal) every aspect of the script is. I'd hate it even if it weren't for the titular blasphemy.

I'm far too familiar with the original, and with genre tics it spawned, not to feel bored during the remake's setup. Once the deaths and the gore begin, the filmmakers have a chance to show off their bad taste, and their budget, and it's not too shabby. But there are no revelations here, the scares are rote and it has only a smidgen of the energy & lunacy of Raimi's original.

Undoubtedly well made remake, with decent premise to hide the "possession" and nice level of gore (hats off for not using CGI). But much like most remakes you have to ask the question "why?" This remake looks like someone shoved "127 hours", "the Exorcist", "Cabin Fever", "Carrie", "Final Destination 3" and "The Ring" into a blender and then cut and pasted it onto the original "Evil Dead" film stock. Rather than enjoying an original film it became an exercise in "spot the (better) original"

A delightfully mean-spirited, deliciously bloody bit of horror entertainment. The practical gore effects really are something special, and I think that's the main thing I like about this. But that alone isn't enough to make it great. While the original has a charmingly unique and fresh style, this version instead has what I would call a very conventional horror style. The film is unique in some ways, but its overall feel reminds me of every other horror movie I've seen in the last decade.

Suffers from all of the cliches that plague the horror genre, yet it is picked up by strong performances and direction that retains the overall feel of Raimi's original film. I give it bonus points for using conventional filmmaking and effects rather than CGI to deliver its gore and scares. Some of the shot composition, particularly during the films climax, is stunning in its delivery and had me on the edge of my seat. The only detraction is that the quirky humour of the original is missing.

The addition of a little new backstory turns this into a harrowing allegory for the utterly destructive nature of addiction on the victim and their loved ones, and the often misguided idealism of the loved ones trying fruitlessly to help. Overtures are made to the complete shambles of health care, mental health specifically, failing addicts, but it does seem a little harsh in blaming the addict. Still, it's effective, and surrounded by a quality horror flick. Also that lady cut she own face off.

Ten years later, the critics who called this po-faced — or, amazingly enough, “torture porn” — seem rather silly; it is, in fact, a very close and competent pastiche of the early Raimi style, with gory pratfalls, manic zooms, and litres of various kinds of human goop. There is one regrettable defect in that the bait-and-switch of the last act requires that the rest of the film follow a strikingly bland character, but it's a swing for the fences I found myself liking in retrospect.

ED2013 delivers a modern-day take on the good old Video Nasty, if it were made by people with actual budgets, film degrees and no margin for error. That willingness to go over the top without trying to make the audience chuckle is what makes it work. It never feels like torture porn even as it dismembers its cast, never like a postmodern discourse even as it nods to the original, it's just a well-made Yet Another Cabin Movie. Not as iconic, not as groovy, not as fun, but it can hold its head up.

It's not that this is a terrible film, but you can easily skip it and never have to look back. Whereas the original had a great tone, memorable characters, and managed to stretch the shoestring budget, this is fine just paying in the great practical effects with some terrible acting and a boilerplate story that only exists because the dumb characters act dumb. There is also a bad clash between the seriousness of the situation and the campy elements this chooses to carry over from the original.

Big fan of the original and hater of remakes, but this one has some good and original ideas I love. The addiction angle is great and should have been explored more (like in Resolution), and I like the deadites "turning back" and playing on your real fears, guilt and insecurity. I also like that the references to the original are jumbled around to keep you guessing who this movie's "Ash" will be. It's a shame that the script is lacking and the acting is stale from everyone except an amazing Mia.

As a result, it will bore audiences who have seen more than a couple of these "cabin in the woods" films before. The real change in comparison to Raimi's The Evil Dead is in the tone. While the original The Evil Dead was filled with campy (be it unintentional) humor and badassery, this movie only has a little bit of both. The absence of a Bruce Campbell is compensated by a lot of very intense, very satisfying scenes with lots of blood and lots of gore. The result is a movie that you feel like you shouldn't be watching, but at the same time you can't get around the fact that it's very entertaining.

While most remakes look quite lousy -- making poor homages with tons of CGI or fucked up story adaptations --, Alvarez dares to replicate the same amount of blood and body fluids as the original did 30 years ago, presenting some strong metaphors on youth, growth and sexuality. To be honest, pretty much all of the characters are really watered-down, to the point where they make even the common horror stereotypes seem interesting. The additional plot introduced generally doesn't add much over the original, but it's probably nice for those going in blind. A really good rereading of Sam Raimi's seminal films. Although the establishment of the characters appears forced, the wackiness and humour are toned down and the cool one-liners are almost completely absent, it pretty much nails everything else. The effects are great, the violence is super visceral and even inventive, thus avoiding feeling rehashed, the suspense is very consistent, and there are actual, crafty scares, proving that horror movies are alive and well if you know what you're doing.

Somewhere toward the middle, as characters became stupider and body horror became the point, I became doubtful and a little bored, although the possessed characters were still quite creepy. The last 1/4 or 1/3 really dragged for me. The very end where the remaining protagonist somehow still had the energy to be angry and vengeful struck me as just corny and left a bad taste in my mouth.

Almost hard to compare to the originals in many ways. The camp is gone, Bruce is gone. This is a remake with modern gore thats occasionally hard to watch.

I was irrationally angry when I first read they were re-making EVIL DEAD. When I actually saw the movie I forgot all about my prejudgment. To this day I'm not really sure if this was good or not, but the actual watching experience made it all but impossible for me to even think about it both times I've watched it. Hard pass on the gore extended cut that seems to exist, though.

A revival of the sloppy 1981 movie, "The Evil Dead". It uses the same cabin with a swinging seat at its porch. Though a big improvement to its prequel, it still capitalized on bloody mayhem and gory, and not on pure thrill and fright as a horror flic. In several instances, the decisions of the cast are inconsistent with normal human reactions in dire situations. Thus, some scenes are exasperating. MY SCORING: 99-96=Great; 95-90=Very good; 89-85=Good; 84-80=So-so; 79-70=Boring; Below 70=Forget it

Evil Dead is a violent film to say the least. However due to its stylish camerawork and amazing practical effects. It functions as a visceral horror experience on its own merits. Even if it still pales in comparison to the originals. The characters are also pointless and nothing more than blood bags. The story follows the original with a distinct lack of humor and camp which made The Evil Dead so much fun.

My thoughts watching this: Shouldn't this genre have died with "Cabin in the woods". So much psychological background and the only one I care about is Grandpa. If your urine has that colour you should probably see a doctor. Urgh, movie, that's not scary it's just gross. Why is my cat dragging his butt over the carpet? Better go check on him. Okay, where were we? That's a bloody Chekov's inventory this movie has. That after credits scene added absolutely nothing, but at least it's done now.

I think it does a very good job as a modern The Evil Dead. It is nice to see some more of the book, as well as excessive brutality.

I hate horror movies. I watched this because a friend of mine wanted to show it to me and being the nice guy that I am I agreed. Is this supposed to be an example of a good horror movie remake? If so it's a good example of why I don't watch a lot of horror movies. The whole thing isn't even remotely scary. The script is bad. The acting is bad. What it really boils down to is gore porn. Only If you're a big fan of horror movie aesthetics would you be able to get something out of this film.

Not a bad remake. Takes the scares and pure horror of the original and twists them around. Could have used some laughs, though.

I still prefer the original. This is nice and gory and follows the original story really well. I do wish they added more to this film to really make it stand out from the others, just one thing to give this movie it's own personality. It's a good film nonetheless

Accomplishes what it sets out to do - be as gory as possible - but I don't actually want to see what it is setting out to do.

Mia (Jane Levy), a drug addict, is determined to kick the habit. To that end, she asks her brother, David (Shiloh Fernandez), his girlfriend, Natalie (Elizabeth Blackmore) and their friends Olivia (Jessica Lucas) and Eric (Lou Taylor Pucci) to accompany her to their family's remote forest cabin to help her through withdrawal. Eric finds a mysterious Book of the Dead at the cabin and reads aloud from it, awakening an ancient demon. All hell breaks loose when the malevolent entity possesses Mia.

Honestly might have liked it more than the original (which is certainly not one of my favorites). The characters were pretty dull, and a lot of the acting left something to be desired, but the higher budget (without relying on CGI!) helped this really seem professional compared to the camp-fest that is the original. It does go more than a little over the top, but that's part of the point.

What crap! Not a single scare. No humor. No nudity. No reason why anyone would want to watch this.

It says something about the state of current horror that I admire the remake for its restraint in winking at the audience, especially considering it's a remake of a Raimi movie.

I have to admit, this film is not as horrible as it sounds. Still, I wish they wouldn't have used the title, because now every time you talk with someone about Evil Dead you have to make it clear you're not talking about this crap. This film is all about nasty gore. There is so much of dismemberment, blood and vomit, that seeing it just looses its effect. Supposedly there are no computer effects used, and all those cut off limbs really look good(?).

If you go into this movie not trying to compare it to the original Evil Dead movies, its a fairly entertaining, gory horror film.

Wow I missed Bruce Campbell as the leading actor was pathetic and far from being cool! The funny thing is the effects are much worse and look funnier than the original film. I'm not scared a bit! But when I first saw "1981" movie, I couldn't forget it for months!

A fun remake that doesn't improve upon the original but manages to not disgrace it, which is all I was really hoping for. Plus the ending is pretty bad ass.

Evil Dead is nothing compared to it's originals (as they are my favorite movies), however for a remake of a beloved classic.... it delivers. As expected the characters are dumb and somewhat un-enjoyable, but the movie focuses on disturbing scenes instead of jump scares which is refreshing. It also sports some of the best cinematography of modern day movies. Overall, the direction was beautiful and perfect but the actors and story were a "little" sluggish. Still good.

The remake took some liberty in the interpretation, and changed the story a bit. I thought the new story wasn't quite as timeless as the original, but oh well. Still entertaining.

The makers of this film were pretty evil. They took one of my beloved movie franchises and twisted it into some sick stuff. Sure, I found the special effects to be quite well done but, man, this movie was gruesome...
