Everlasting Moments

Masterful period drama showing the unmistakable touch of Sweden's greatest filmmaker. Relates the life of a turn-of-a-century mother of seven and her wife-beating husband, probably the unsung story of countless nameless women of her day. As always with Troell, the performances are astounding and the cinematography is painstakingly perfect and never flashy. A sense of realism is created by attention to detail and at once sensitive and brutally honest characterizations.

A lot of this feels rather familiar, and the film is a bit slow, but overall it's well done. As one would expect given the subject matter, the cinematography is excellent... although Troell falls into the common period film trap of overdoing the sepia tones. Performances and music are good. Very strong characterization. Nothing truly exceptional or special about the movie, but I liked it and found it moving at times.

Slow, gentle and ultimately unsatisfying. Nørby is good, but most of the other characters are very thin, and the narration technique is underused, leaving a very wishy-washy story.

A downtrodden woman discovers she is good at something and gains a measure of self-respect and appreciation from others. No doubt well-intentioned, but it’s all rather dreary and predictable, and the reflections on the early days of photography and cinema aren’t as interesting as they might have been.

The politics; starting as a gentle warning against the rotten to-and-fro of populism, then very-much endorsing capitalism -obviously stank. Beyond that though, it's a very nicely crafted and performed family drama.

Has one phenomenal scene with a lot of dullness surrounding it. Well-made, but almost impossible for me to recommend.

There's definitely something touching about parts of it, but parts are just to slow.

Extremely forgettable period drama. Feels like a typical Hollywood period drama, with lame narration, fart jokes, and a lack of any sort of emotional depth. All the "sad" moments just feel manipulative rather than genuine. The whole film is just extremely obvious. Nevertheless, there are some extremely gorgeous shots.

It's through Troell's sense of the landscape and seasons and his attention to gender sensibilities that Everlasting Moments represents the height of filmmaking technology and emotional sophistication.

Enormously pleasant time.
