Two-thirds an accurate but boring mountain-climbing simulation, and one-third a gripping tale of survival, Everest is certainly a mixed bag. It takes too long to get to the part we all want to see, it doesn't develop its characters well at all, and by the time we get to the disaster, it's easy to be worn down by what came before. It's beautiful to look at from start to finish, and it certainly works best on a large screen, but Everest is a movie with too many problems to recommend.

Survival epic is beautifully (at times terrifyingly) filmed, and generally well-performed, though the star-studded supporting cast is an occasional distraction and evokes memories of the 70s disaster film cycle (not necessarily a bad thing). Unfortunately the film miscalculates in using this recreational-day-gone-wrong as a piously sincere man-against-the-elements tragedy, which without a more noble impetus makes the high-drama seem unearned (if not a bit silly) at times.

Standard treatment of a bad situation, more or less successfully conveying its badness. This viewer finds it hard not to feel that mountain climbers in general calculate poorly with respect to the risks, and do so because they have an inflated notion of the allegedly incalculable rewards (which are what, exactly?).

'Into Thin Air' provides an eye opening glimpse into the logistics of Everest expeditions, while also providing a first hand account of events that day, albeit from a singular point of view. It's a great read. 'Everest' tries to present all sides of the event from second hand accounts after the fact and suffers as a consequence, with characters and incidents being rather hastily sketched. It looks pretty good for the most part, but much of the action is confusing and it all feels a bit soulless.

A massively talented large cast which leads to some confusion (at least for me) during the climatic storm. Perhaps intentional and I should have been paying sharper attention but had written this off as a blockbuster disaster flick an hour earlier. Its nothing special, but its not boring and it resonates fairly effectively being based on a true story.

Brolin walks into the movie wearing a Dole '96 shirt, fanning himself with a Spin City calendar while going "Ah, 1996" . When there's a line to get to the top like an amusement park attraction it's not that impressive ... Mind you I get winded walking to the top row at the movies.

Coldest Baltasar film -- hehe --, but pretty much coreographed with wow shots and strict build-up conversations. The lack of emotion truly makes this sometimes gripping and haunting -- Brolin's rocky hand and face walking through ice is really a strong image.

better than expected. for the major part, it keeps a pretty factual, almost documentary tone. the tradeoff is that everything turns out to be somewhat unspectacular. they climp up, they go down, some die. attempts at your empathy are thankfully few and mostly built up in the third act. but then again, who would pity those idiots anyway? you don't wanna die? guess what: don't climb fucking mount everest.

Everest is not a disaster movie, it's the story of a tragic day on the mountain for a few families. It does not try to make more of this with ridiculous "action sequences" and does not try to create a happy ending. It is a mature, intelligent, realistic film which is gripping and engaging, and allows the decisions real people make to determine events and outcomes. Confusing, yes, but in imax 3D this was a terrific film, and Everest was a wonderfully immense backdrop to a brilliantly filmed story

The story of the disastrous 1996 expedition on Everest, where the commercialization of mountaineering, bad luck, and worse weather combined to take eight lives. A true spectacle, most at home in IMAX and 3D, and as spectacles go quite enthralling and tragic; the script isn't an unqualified success, but a fine cast (led by Jason Clarke in a portrait of genuine decency), excellent direction, stunning sound, and an all-around strong production make it well worth it...at least in a theater.

Not sure why this is getting hammered by the critics. It's not bad, it's just mediocre. At certain points it feels like a T.V. movie but it's interesting enough with strong performances by an ensemble cast that you just keep going. This is nowhere near as good as Krakauer's actual first hand account of the events but it will still have you on the edge of your seat at times. Unfortunately, there are still way too many extraneous base camp moments and not enough everest scenes.

Great cinematography and pretty good acting alone can't make a great film. The missing ingredient was the fact that I never really cared for any of the characters. What happened here and what I find often happens with "based or true events" films is the fact that since the stories are based on real people and events the film makers feel that they can skimp on backstory and character development, which is just not the case. A good movie that could've been great but ultimately wasn't.

When I first heard of this movie, I instantly thought it looked boring, like "Alive" lite, probably because I assumed there'd be no cannibalism. On a whim I caught it on TV and every other scene I thought, "Oh, that guy's in it too!" "Everest" didn't have a whole lot of originality going for it, but it did have a good cast and a decent execution. If you're curious, it wont be memorable, but it is enjoyable.

The ultimate "Dad film" - a bootstrap battle between Man and Nature, human endurance triumphing over the impossible, a pregnant wife to return home to, sidelined actresses, bromances and brobattles, "based on a true story", et al. The script, which loses sight of its many characters in its sweeping generalities, does a disservice to the production's truly excellent technical accomplishments, always on full display.

While watching this movie I thought... Will the filmmakers ever let me rest? This film has a lot of scary scenes and suspense. Mother nature is not to be messed with and I found myself asking several times "Why do people do this to themselves?" I was tired just watching the climbers get tired. The movie is really beautiful with its picturesque views. The acting is all really good especially from Jason Clarke. I wasn't too happy with Keira Knightley, but her part was smaller in this luckily...

Dull disaster movie that fails to do credit to the harrowing true story it's supposed to be telling. The first hour is wasted on tedious character-building, go-nowhere conversations that become even more meaningless once we're up the mountain and they're all indistinguishable shouting figures covered in snow & climbing gear. Things pick up a tad when the storm strikes, but the iffy effects (wind machines on a soundstage) and lack of a clear focal character cost Everest dearly.

I didn't really ever look into this movie before renting it, so my expectations were pretty low. I expected something short of cliffhanger or vertical limit. I was pleased to see a sort of even exploration of the trip up the mountain itself and all the possible dangers therein and presented us with the outcome of a real tragedy that befell some real people in 1996. It was a good look into a world I will never be apart of, not really a movie made for multiple viewings though.

Pretty impressive visually. It has a really solid group of actors, too. It looks good and manages to build up to its climax well, with a mix of character and narrative development. Nothing spectacular, but more than adequate for a blockbuster. The climax is a bit of a letdown, though, endless blizzard and confusion that might be appropriate on conveying the messiness of the situation but doesn't match the films dramatic beats and style.

If you ascend those stadium theater steps looking for the big payoff that drives people to spend tens of thousands of dollars, abandon loved ones, brave skin-crisping temperatures, submit their bodies and minds to the torturous effects of extreme elevation and oxygen deprivation, and risk losing everything from fingers and toes to their very lives ... well, you'll be disappointed. No answers on that front. But you'll see plenty of pluck in the midst of all that.

This was a really pleasant surprise: Icelandic director Kormákur delivers a real old-fashioned adventure. It's probably as faithful to real events & locations as this kind of film gets. The downside is that the true story is not that heroic or cinematic. There are some really suspenseful scenes; and the characters are believable without glorification. As with other based-on-true-story films, I thought it was unnecessary to cut to domestic scenes as they always take you out of the action.

Not sure why this is getting average reviews. It is a below average, boring film padded with big name actors. They dont build the purpose of the story enough; it's bland and follows a predictable format. The target audience is the few dozen people that have actually climbed Mt. Everest... The rest of the world, assuming you have a pulse above 50 bpm, should be extremely bored with this film. At 2 hours long, trudging along very slowly, the movie should ended at 1 hour 20 minutes.

I simply enjoy mountain movies! From those Arnold Fanck films from the 1920s to this year's Everest (2015). There's something about the big view and snowy landscapes that gets me. I don't think I would be going too far though saying that this movie was visually beautiful; Kormakur definitely knew what he was doing and wanted to accomplish, and I think he did so in creating a suspenseful, atmospheric look at an intriguing sub-culture and brutal event. There's a feeling here that if you're playing with fire/ice you gonna get burned/frozen. So the question "Why do it?" has to be confronted, and it is, though the answer with these experienced mountaineers is not heroic, it's practical. That turns the film into a tragedy of good people making human mistakes and I respect the effectiveness of this direct approach.
