Evan Almighty

Comedy, Family/Kids
1h 36m
Steve Carell, reprising his role as the polished, preening newscaster Evan Baxter of "Bruce Almighty," is the next one appointed by God to accomplish a holy mission. Newly elected to Congress, Evan leaves Buffalo behind and shepherds his family to suburban northern Virginia. Once there, his life gets turned upside-down when God (Freeman) appears and mysteriously commands him to build an ark. But his befuddled family just can't decide whether Evan is having an extraordinary mid-life crisis or is truly onto something of Biblical proportions. (Universal)

Painful. Another Daily Show alumnus shows up as the news anchor in this one: Ed Helms. According to IMDb, his character's name was apparently Ed Carson. I'm now waiting on Ed Almighty to round out the trilogy. In the spirit of this sequel, it will be about a man who leaves the news after 30 seconds to become an astronaut who talks with God. There will be talks of actually sending Helms and Freeman into space (for the sake of realism), and the movie should cost more than $500 million to make. [Full review]

It pains me to give this movie a bad review, because a lot of the people involved are genuinely funny (Steve Carell, Jonah Hill, even Wanda Sykes.) Unfortunately, this shit was just not funny. You'll start watching and Carell will say a couple funny things and you'll laugh a bit, but not much. Then it'll quickly dawn on you that this movie is based on animal slapstick humor. Then you'll remember that animal slapstick is the least funny kind of humor. Then you'll be sad.

If atrocious puns, montages of people falling and getting boo-boos and one joke premises are your thing then you're sure to love this movie. If you're a reasonable person you'll probably sit and think about how it's sad that this garbage costs more than alot of movies this summer and what kind of starving nation still went hungry and what public school went underfunded.

God almighty !!! This is absolutely the most hypocritical crap I've ever seen. Not in a million years funny or likeable; the fucking slapstick comedy is ridiculously old and the bird-shit-gag was MAYBE funny the first time, but after the third time you kind of get that déjà vu feeling. ... The script is lame, the cgi is even worse, the acting pffff, the portrayal of women and children is laughable and the ending is just plain awful. ... By far one of the worst on criticker.

The set-up's predictable (yet another working dad neglecting his kids); the build-up is too (The Santa Clause, anyone?), but the plethora of biblical puns make it fun. The humour is mostly bland slapstick (Hill's stalker Eugene aside) but Carell's solid turn (the beard probably helped) as the guy God is seemingly screwing over gives the second act surprising dramatic credibility. Finally, though the CGI boat ride of the third act is cringe-worthy, its environmentalist slant is appreciable.

Steve Carell and $175 million both deserve much better than a misguided comedy that comprised primarily of jokes regarding a not-funny dance and animal poop. Watching the latter decompose would still have more entertainment value than this- at least you don't have to waste your money to watch it.

Adds nothing funny to the original, even with Steve Carell making us laugh in a couple of scenes. Although it's the kind of puritan, family comedy that doesn't fit in Carell's talent.

It was quite ok. Steve Carell was funny and reminded me at his roll in The Office by using his voices and faces. It has the honour to be called most expensive comedy , but it won't get the title of Best Comedy. The humor of supporting actors was sometimes even better than Evan's humor.
Probably a good film for the family.

Good natured and enjoyable film sands off any of the coarse edges of its predecessor and presents an old-fashioned Capraesque fable lacking any bite or resonance, though this is perhaps the idea. Well performed by all, especially Carell who brings a genuine warmth and goodwill to a potentially soporific role, while never tipping over into sentiment; while the final message is a bit muddled, uneasily mixing faith with political corruption comeuppance, its good spirits make it an easy watch.

The script is a choke-full of cliches so big that I won't even bother listing them. The saving grace is of course the charismatic Steve Carell, along with a solid supporting cast (Wanda Sykes standing out as per usual) and a handful of good jokes. Unfortunately what prevails is the mumbo jumbo about religion and family and one is left with the impression that subtlety and originality are complete strangers to the makers of this film.

Morgan Freeman as god is something that got old really fast especially upon rewatching this in 2018. It had some light moments and some good fun times with a preachy message. Evan Almighty is a major step down from the first one. It couldn't be more apparent that Jim Carrey is missing in having to deal with Steve Carrel's uneven style. There are some sweet moments to be found and John Goodman is always great to watch. So take what you can from it, but don't expect much.

While not as good as the original Evan Almighty packs a few laughs. It is pretty much a rehash of the original movie which I am less forgiving of. The casting is great which really helps save this movie but I wish people like Wanda Sykes, Jonah Hill, Ed Helms, and Molly Shannon would have been utilized more in the movie. I could probably watch this movie again but I still think the original is better.

Evan Almighty is simply a moronic film. It's predecessor Bruce Almighty had it's critics but I enjoy it because it was a Jim Carrey film. So this weak stab at a sequel without Jim Carrey was realistically never going to be as successful. I do like Steve Carrell but he's better than this. And ultimately he plays second best to Jim Carrey. The whole thing is absolutely ridiculous and completely unfunny. As a standalone film this is bad, but as a sequel compared to its predecessor it's dreadful.

Well, either he took those comments to heart or he earned enough creative clout from Bruce's $243 million domestic box-office to make a sequel his way ... without having to compromise. Either way, Evan Almighty is a much stronger, morally grounded family film because of it. Granted, the spiritual nuggets here are never quite as potent as the moment when Bruce runs up against free will and empathizes with an all-powerful God unable to make someone love Him. "Evan Almighty" is just a fun movie to watch. Everyone can find some aspect of the movie to laugh at whether it is the obvious, subtle, or running jokes that are in it. Also, the story and morals are really relevant to today's world. It is a good, family friendly movie that was definitely worth seeing. Also, Steve Carrell was just great at being both zany and serious.

Really tame 'family' comedy with some tacky CGI, it's hard to believe that much of the team responsible for Bruce... returned to create this lame duck. Carell is certainly no Jim Carrey, but to be fair to the bloke there's absolutely nothing in the script for him to get his teeth into. As a kids' film, shown some random weekday morning over Christmas, this might not seem all that bad. But watching it of an evening, expecting a half-decent follow-up to 'Bruce', it's incredibly disappointing.

Steve Carell was quite funny and sweet in this film, but what ultimately causes this one to severely fail is the sheer retarded pseudo-morality no one else but Hollywood has to infect us with, regarding God and the fact that, apparently, spending your time with your family and taking care of a dog can change the world.
