Fearing the gold fever, authorities set out to harass the diggers, forcing the outlanders to consider nobler and more economically stable pursuits such as agriculture and commerce. Pushed to the limit and fed up with the oppression, led to revolt by Peter Lalor (Rafferty), the miners valiantly march to Eureka Hill to establish a stockade in fiery anticipation of further intimidation. Little did they know the violence and bloodshed that was in store for them. (DVD cover)

Excellent telling of a seminal event in Australian history - low-key and naturalistic performances and story-telling style are a definite asset, and make the vivd scenes of ineveitable mob-rule come to life with a still quite startling intensity, some 70 years later.

Australia's own little revolution, the Eureka Stockade (1949), or the Eureka Rebellion of 1954 as it was called, as brought to us by UK's Ealing Studios. The storytelling wasn't exactly super, but the charm carries this for the most part. Kind of a popcorn variation of a rebellion. Works for a revolutionary romp,
