There comes a time in a man's life, where he must get his lazy arse up off the couch, toss a plate of Costco tortilla chips topped off with a generous handful of cheddar into the microwave, pop the top off an over-priced and under-hopped Japanese lager from the fridge, and start writing witty Criticker reviews for all those movies he's seen over the past month, but hasn't had the gumption and/or get-up-and-go to get done. Wait, what was this movie about again? Prison? Uh...gay?

Håfström adds very little flavor or interest to liven up what turns out to be an occasionally violent drama. The action comes in marginal doses, but the excitement builds quite a bit more toward the climax and gives fans a taste of the blow-em-up action the stars typically warrant. It's not enough to earn action-classic status, and the under-scripted and silly Escape Plan never lives up to its potential, but there's just enough from Sly and Arnold to enjoy it purely as a mild guilty pleasure.

This film doesn't do anything new or special, but I still enjoyed and appreciated its sympathetic handling of Arabs/Muslims, as well as its concern over prison privatization (and concomitant corruption), demonization of whistleblowers, and the skirting of the Sixth Amendment. Håfström has clearly seen enough action movies to copy their beats with deftness if not originality. Some of the plot points seem a bit stupid, but it stars Stallone and Schwarzenegger, so you kind of expect that.

I'm not sure if the movie should've been more serious (since there's a basis for some dark stuff here) or more silly (since, you know, Arnold and Sly). As it stands it tries to be both and stumbles along the way. The odd scene transitions and cardboard characters didn't help either. Still, it was worth the price of admission to experience a new glorious Ahnuld Scream in 2013. Aughhahuahua!

I have to be an advocate of a Dad Movie that sneaks in digs on the commercialization of the prison system, creeping loss of the rights to due process, and commodifying incarceration for capital gain. But who am I kidding? Caviezel (now, Honorary God) says "I own your ass" after Schwarzenegger draws him a picture of him going up it. A Muslim tells Jesus (again, Caviezel) God is Great before Christ pops a cap in his ass. He saw every scene and asked, How can Christ be Gayer? And that's ok.

The classic, nonsense plot action movie is dying, the one where any Joe could shout out some harebrained idea to a studio exec and in response hear "We'll just get Arnold and it'll be perfect." Thirty years ago, we'd have been handed "Escape Plan" and the American public would have been happy with it, today they demand love stories, integral comedy, and expensive cars. I, for one, love the classic action film of yore, and "Escape Plan" sated me perfectly.

There's a few neat ideas in it (the Bond-esque 10-minute opening sequence of Stallone breaking out of the first prison was actually my favorite part of the whole movie), but it mostly reminded me that I just wish Arnold and Stallone had done a team up action flick back in their 80s primes. (Well, technically, Stallone's prime was in 1976 with Rocky and Arnold's in 1991 with Terminator 2, but hey, average that out and you get the 80s.)

The big showdown at the end was way too average compared too older work of both lead actors. Still; Ahnuld carrying a badass machine gun and lots of swearing in German: pretty funny. I also don't get the recent trend of dragging hollywood films - even mindless action movies - out to approx. 120 minutes. These kind of things need to be as fast and tight as your little sister!

Escape Plan is a nostalgic throwback to the 80's and looks and feels like an 80's action flick. Stallone and Schwarzenegger have finally collaborated in a feature length piece and I have waited a lifetime for this. However I didn't think the film quite lived up to what could and should of been something very special. Sly is forgettable but Arnold gets the best lines and does something different and enjoyable. The plot and pace aren't the most engaging but the action packed finale is enjoyable.

It feels like a cheesy 80s flick -- with no attempt to make it updated, which is good --, but it looks too tight to be fully enjoyable. Sylvester and Arnold provide a couple of good scenes -- what about Arnold freaking out in german? or Arnold shooting guys like Rambo? or Sylvester doing all kinds of tricks to gather stuff so he can come up with an absurd plan? --, but the script forces its way to a weird, anticlimactic finale -- Arnold was the genius, Sy's former boss is silenced by 50 Cent.

Spoiler: They escape. Sly and Arnie finally get to flex their muscles together but it is in the confines of a crazy prison. The prison is cool (silly) and each of our action stars chews some major scenery. Everything other than the actual escape is pretty bad, and I just don't buy that Stallone is the smartest guy in the room angle.

It is a clever film at times even if the dialogue is atrocious through out the film. It does not go over the top on the action until the final sequence and does build the tension rather well. It probably could have been a much better film had their been more detail given to the plot structure.

Escape Plan is a fun movie. It can appear to be a little slow, but the story is surprisingly gripping. The novelty of Stallone and Schwarzenegger being together in a film never really gets old, and both of their one liners at the end are exactly as they should be. Campy and over-the-top.

The idea of a professional escape artist breaking out of prisons 2 test their security could be developed in2 a fun thriller, but I think it goes without saying - given the presence of America's 2 greatest meatheads - that this is not that film. Having everything in common w/ the lunkheaded 80's action flix these 2 r known for, the script is full of leaps in logic, lots of shooting & even more punching. Worse, it doesn't even deliver the Freddy vs. Jason-style throwdown hinted at in the trailer.

This should have been much more fun. I'm normally the first in line for a bit of cheesy action nonsense with either Sly or Arnie, so an escape movie with both of them manning-up sounded entertaining on paper. What a shame then that this is neither daft enough to laugh at, nor good enough to laugh with. "Escape Plan" is humourless from every conceivable angle, with the poorly cobbled together story and average action not helping at all.

It deteriorates into mediocre gunfights in the last quarter. That is the only thing you need to know that tells you how it fails its interesting premise. Your two hours would be better spent in solitary confinement.

This film felt exactly like the setpieces in a video game where you evade guards and fiddle with shit to break out or into some facility. Arnold seems to be trying too hard to be likeable again. The sarcastic aloof muscle man of the 80's-90's was better. Everything about the plot was weak and the dime store villains were lame. I expected a better performance from Caviezel as well. Also, just like how Silver surfer was the herald of Galactus, "Fiddy" cent is the herald of Shitty Mediocrity.

after the initial joy of seeing my long past heroes once again subsided, which was pretty much when the movie started, i couldn't help but feel awkward. like when you meet your childhood's best friend after 20 years and realize there's nothing to talk about. You went on, evolved into someone completely different. Whereas he is still the same, just an older version, clinging to his past so badly, it's painful to watch. oh, and he's making some pretty shitty movies in the meantime.

The punch in the face, though, comes in the form of all those elements that earn this pic its hard-R rating. Scores of onscreen men are repeatedly "beaten," "tortured," "bloodied" and "killed," all for our "enjoyment" and "entertainment." And the prospect of sitting quietly in a theater seat just so you can be mercilessly pummeled by bare-knuckle obscenities would set even Rocky Balboa back on his heels. Seems like this one's pretty expendable after all. (pluggdin.com)

Watching the two most meat-headed actors of the late 20th century try to make an emotional connection with each other is probably the cringiest thing I've watched all year. The heist-y break out elements work fine, and are totally watchable, but when film steps away from that, like when it tries to make social commentary about the prison industrial complex, or any literally any attempt at character development, it gets pretty bad.

In Escape Plan, Sylvester Stallone plays Ray Breslin, a man who specializes in a very specific talent: he infiltrates and then escapes from the nation's most notorious prisons, in order to point out flaws in security. One day, Ray and his team are approached by a young CIA agent for a new type of job: breaking out of one the government's shadow prisons, a place that doesn't officially exist, used to house the worst threats to peace and order in the free world.

I was pleasantly surprised by Escape Plan. Stallone and Schwarzenegger unite to provide a decent, albeit expected, action flick with a little bit more plot, humour and fun thrown for good measure. Tahir does well in his role. The "escape plan" aspect here doesn't disappoint; the film is full of cool and exciting tricks and cons, complete with a couple of badass Stallone voice-overs. Elsewhere though, the dialogue often feels contrived, the acting stiff, the bad guy cliche, the secondary good guys (Ryan and 50 Cent) inconsequential, and the final twist an unnecessary complication. But even with all of the aforementioned said, this remains an entertaining film punctuated by a few classic action-movie one-liners.

Escape Plan is guy-movie candy far more amusingly gratifying than either Expendables or The Last Stand. Stallone and Schwarzenwegger deliver the undying charm that The Expendables was too dry and uncreative to propagate, while here they have it in spades, especially Arnold in a cheekier role as the movie clips along with effective action, drama and, most importantly, banter and levity in this lively vise of cheesy '90s-style entertainment.

Right minded people prefer the former, sadly this is one of the latter, with Stallone taking the lion's share of the screen time and the "better" part. There is little to recommend when it comes to Escape Plan. It's a serious prison break movie that probably should have been tonally more of a lark. Its stars struggle to carry the movie, and this is made even more apparent by distracting supporting cast members, and there's surprisingly little action or thrills for a prison break movie. Any attempt to generate suspense and tension falls flat. This is a dull experience that reminds us why both stars are on the downside of their careers.
