French escapism at sea with natives and crooked smugglers seeing tragedy with a woman going down with them. Typical popcorn exotic-ism that was popular at the time, especially recognizable if you've seen precode Hollywood films. Don't feel much greatness from a french film making perspective, but for a potboiler production it does what it sets out to do.
