Thought Provoking!!! Strong Philosophical-Psycological Story!!!

One of the ultimate "blank checks" as you have to wonder what made Lumet and studio execs think this would sell. Very BIG performances.

A thoroughly astonishing and incredible way to introduce myself to this play. I'd like to see it on stage, but it has a lot to live up to -- the perfectly anguished performances from Burton and Firth, the creative and introspective cinematography, Jenny Agutter's bush, the admittedly theatrical-sounding dialogue that delves deep into the (empty) pits of passion. I guess I've seen a few psychiatrist-treats-troubled-young-man films before, but none evolve as spectacularly as this one does.

Honestly I thought the material was a little silly, but Lumet directs the everloving fuck out of it. It is impossibly, relentlessly compelling.

The moral of the story: worshiping Horse Jesus turns you into a creep. But seriously, this movie is weird as shit and gets pretty creepy in a few parts. Not horror movie creepy, something much more deeply disturbing. There was about 30 minutes that were necessary but boring while the rest was pretty damn good. The film takes its time getting places which I'm ok with but probably to slow for the average modern movie goer. It's fucking weird though. Really fucking weird.

I've read complaints that Lumet brings nothing to it, but that's just wrong. He's in 12 Angry Men mode here, tightening the field and speeding things up with every scene, like we're falling into this horrible abyss. Things fray in the middle when we're given a glimpse at Burton's personal problems. It's both too much and not enough, like the text isn't willing to commit to that story thread.

I can never look at horses the same again.

Intense version of a disturbing play. Burton is very good in this.

Okay Movie

Lovely, tragic, haunting, and moving. One of Sidney Lumet's finest.

Impressive, daring stuff. The premise doesn't have much depth to it but Shaffer manages to dig a lot of good text out of it. Lumet's directing is masterful and the acting is all top-notch.
