There's a lot of trope boxes being checked off here: the story is another slight twist on FernGully, the characters are bog standard, the plot goes exactly where you expect it to, the comic relief side characters are approriately zany, characters are voiced by (awkwardly cast) random celebrities, etc. Basically, it is exactly what you should expect from a middle-of-the-road kids' animated movie. On the plus side: the movie is gorgeous, the dog is amusing and Waltz plays a solid villain.

A beautifully animated film that doesn't really live up to its name. I could see Epic really drawing kids into its world, but for adults the story is way too contrived to leave much impact once the credits roll. The story borrows from a variety of successful films including Princess Mononoke, Avatar and Fern Gully. There is even an extended sequence that is straight out of Star Wars Episode IV. It's an enjoyable, fast-paced animated film that will be forgotten as soon as its over.

I wouldn't call it ground-breaking. I wouldn't call it a classic. Which is something to take into account seeing as they didn't come up with the most imaginative name for the film. It's just a fun animated adventure flick with a certain number of interesting characters who were more intelligently designed than I expected, with great, glittering CGI, and perhaps something to watch on an early Saturday afternoon.

The most memorable thing from this movie is Ozzy's animation, everything else is pretty standard. And the ending does not work for me, what then? I think the character should have been given a choice, and she should have had to live with it.

A perfectly watchable but thoroughly forgettable action-adventure kid-flick-by-numbers. Dialogue and plotting are by-the-numbers, character motivations and joke opportunities telegraphed miles away. Cute enough, though, for the most part.

Light hearted family friendly story with excellent animation. I really enjoyed the fantasy and great imagination of the film. If not for a few very annoying characters and constant shit music would have rated even higher.

Pretty much just computer animated Ferngully, only kinda boring, and I'm not eight anymore. As of now, it's only been three years and most of the world has forgotten about this, imagine how lost it'll be in thirty.

Middle-of-the-road kids' movie. The story's predictable, there are too many pointless comic relief characters, and the tone is all over the place. And yet this had a charm that I couldn't resist. The main character was likable, the story (though pretty standard) was well-written, and the animation was honestly some of the most gorgeous I've ever seen. It's funny to say, considering this clearly took many cues from Ferngully, but this is what I WISH Ferngully could have been more like.

This film's sweet, with decent animation, but it's not epic. The plot is okay, if a little safe. The voice acting is okay, though nothing really stands out...a sentiment that sums up the film.

It was trying far too hard to establish some sort of mythology, a mythology that I never bought into.
And Epic is a terrible name for a film.

Nice one - if not for the overly dualistic thing: so is death bad and life good? Where is the balance? Kids - and their parents - must demystify death. Mandrake is as important as Queen Tara.

Not nearly as epic as the name implies. While I think the comparisons to Ferngully are misplaced, the story itself is pretty average. The animation is beautiful, though, and the voice acting is pretty good (except Steven Tyler... that one didn't work out so well.)

Misses a lot of oppitunities to do something different, and perhaps even a little special, and ends up being very much a safe play from Blue Sky. All its elements are strongly one-dimensional and by-the-book resulting a perfectly watchable, if unnecessarily insipid family movie. The animation is exceptional however.

The animation in this film is beautiful and I loved a lot of the voice work. The story itself is pretty lame. It's almost a ripoff of Ferngully. I do think Seyfried's character is ADORABLE. She is very fun an likable. Hutcherson's character is a clone of Flynn Rider from Tangled. The best characters were the slug and snail. They provide some much needed comedy in the film. Christoph Waltz has a great bad guy voice. So like I said, good voice work but the characters and story are a bit lame.

On the surface, it's a harmless plot-driven children's adventure, but it also utilizes several characters and relationships that are important to the story. Unfortunately, the filmmakers seem indifferent and about either and all we're mostly left with is a shell of a plot. As an adventure tale, it is not awful, but the half-hearted treatment of the characters made me indifferent to the characters, relationships and any themes in the film. My five year old enjoyed this, however. ps 62

Based loosely on William Joyce's book The Leaf Men and the Brave Good Bugs, this is a good-vs.-evil fairy tale that clothes itself in environmental concerns. It's a cute story about tiny warriors hidden from human eyes who battle to keep a forest green while pushing back the crusty forces of mold and decay. (pluggedin.com)

Christoph Waltz is an international treasure, and the rest of the voice cast is pretty decent, Ansari and O'Dowd particulraly. The film is absolutely gorgeous, and it starts off pretty well. Unfortunately the plot stumbles after the first major turning point, becoming a very done-before "characters need to retrieve [x]". I imagine it is wonderful for someone appropriately young who hasn't seen it all a million times already. It didn't win me over, but it had me going for a bit.

Re: Epic - as it so happens with films that have a lot riding on them - eg. 3D, crisp CG animation, PG-certification - the title takes itself way too seriously. And it's a good thing it did. Epic swooshes, glides and nose-dives as deftly as the film's main mode of transportation, the hummingbirds. However, the speed also has a side-effect: it eludes any elements of profoundness and the simplicity of a major Oscar contender.

The plot, although basically your standard good-guys-versus-bad-guys story, still intrigued me because of the interesting aspect of the "different dimensions". I'm glad there wasn't a lot of your typical Dreamworks "humor", and the excellent animation and beautiful soundtrack by Danny Elfman made this movie very fun to watch.
