Perhaps because of the heavier tone, it feels more invested in communicating the emotions of these desperate people feel. The lighter films from this period had a tendency to be too corny to connect, this celebrate the Norwegian stubbornness. Don't go expecting a entertaining film, it's definitely a product of its time.
