So, its based on historical fact (apart from the main thrust of the plot). So its action packed (apart from the long stretched of nothing). So its tense (apart from the fact it isn't). So what is it? Buggered if I know.

Ed Harris is a marvel; here is yet another exhibit. We learn some of a sniper's tactics in an urban theatre (as it were), but the characters of both Harris and Jude Law are fully realized, never cartoonish. None of the deaths is a video game cypher, a tribute to the marshaling of the director's skills.

One of the better war movies about the eastern front. Tho the German movie "Stalingrad" gave a bit more realistic impression, the showdown between the snipers was really played out well in this flick.. That , and a good support cast, some epic set pieces and well orchestrated action sequences (and a memorable end) make for a very entertaining movie. Already seen over half a dozen times and still its good. And Ed harris makes a perfect Nazi

Enemy at the Gates is an absolutely thrilling and satisfying film, one that you can't stop forgetting about after it ends because of the terrifying war that takes place in the background and also because of the haunting battle of wits and skills between the two snipers on either side of the war. Even the love story, which does, admittedly, feel forced in, works because it doesn't distract from the main idea and because the actors involved are so committed and have such strong chemistry.

"For all its nods towards gritty authenticity, Enemy At The Gates occasionally feels like a throwback to an older style of war movie in its lack of historical savvy and caricatured love story. Yet, the sense of scale and action in general, and the central duel between superstar snipers in particular, more than compensate, serving up a gripping battle of wits."
