Enemies Closer

not so good

Top badass moment? Jean-Claude, on finding a beef burger at a border patrol station, announces that he’s vegan and an environmentalist, before slaughtering everyone there. Outside, a bloke is littering the bay with beer cans that aren’t Coors Light... Meanwhile, an ex SEAL employed as the local park warden demonstrates he knows so much about the job that he’s clearing litter, without using a litterpicker. Never come across a junkie's discarded syringe? No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.

(Viewed on 03/15): Van Damme and Peter Hyams have done some good work before, but Enemies Closer is a real letdown. Van Damme gives a real oddball turn as the bad guy, sporting a wacked out hairdo to match, but his performance, while entertaining, is incongruous with the rest of the film and plays like eccentric showboating. The action scenes are OK, but Peter isn't nearly as skilled at working in the DTV action milieu as his son John, whose own editing here is surprisingly choppy.

It's nothing special but a short fun little action film. Van Damme is by far the best thing about this movie, he's really great in this role. I'd say more than half the point are just for his performance.

orlando jones gets one of the worst-written characters in film history. tom everett scott has no charisma as the leading man. van damme's zany acting belongs in a completely different movie -- although he was of course the best part of the film and the only reason i took a chance on it. minus the terrible subplot of jones character this is like a painfully boring landlocked remake of hard rain...which was cheesy in itself but had plenty of action. all the fights in this look roughly the same.

The simple story works, the direction could be worse, and Van Damme is quite good.

Van Damme does a worthwhile job of the unhinged villain but that is where the good ends. The rest of actors are wooden.

Van Damme plays a vegan, blonde and nature lover villain whose main interest is to recover a pack of drugs that fell into a lake in the middle of nowhere, but Enemies Closer is more a dry and unemotional actioner than your 90s-like over-the-top product. Action scenes seem perfectly staged and characters are plain and exactly what we expect of them -- a bunch of Canadian bad guys, a former soldier looking for peace as a park ranger and the brainless dude who wants revenge for his bro's death.
