Curmudgeonly widower Ove (Rolf Lassgård) just wants to die and join his wife Sonja (Ida Engvoll), but various inconveniences, including his new neighbors and a stray cat, induce him to remain with the living. Charming, funny, and moving, this adaptation of a popular Swedish novel clearly abbreviates the source material (especially in the unsatisfying final minutes), but strong acting, warm and witty writing, and sure-handed direction make for a largely rewarding experience.

A bit hit and miss, tonally inconsistent and extremely broad. That said, it's enjoyable, funny, touching and worth a watch. But maybe catch it on TV sometime.

A little too satisfying. Structured oddly like Pixar's Up but with more suicidal overtones (and a headstrong, pregnant Iranian immigrant instead of a Wilderness Scout), it hits all the right notes in ways that began, after about halfway through the running time, to feel pandering. Or award bait. One or two more risks would have improved the experience.

It feels initially like a spin-off of "The 100-year-old man who...", but ends up being great in its own right. The cantankerous old would-be suicidee is portrayed with supreme levity, yet every time it goes to a flashback, the movie ends up hitting you right in the feels. And does so enough times that it feels masterful in the way it jerks your emotions. The supporting cast and the setting all work perfectly too. Very well written and a joy to watch, a cross-generational moral tale for us all.

Poignant and moving, a bittersweet story told with warmth and humour. Builds up to a predictable conclusion but still very enjoyable.

in my experience if you hang around an old twat long enough you eventually discover that yep, they're an old twat. This being a film you discover a sympathetic character hidden underneath & there are several heart warming moments.Decent film

Nice surprise. It's a drama with some dark comedy. Although it starts with the protagonist contemplating suicide, it soon becomes clear that it's probably not going to happen. It reminded me of Forrest Gump as both have protagonists (with limited capabilities) recalling some key events in their lives. This one doesn't get too sentimental, with the exception of the ending, which feels a bit forced. Still, multiple scenes got to me and made me reflect on my own life. That's not a bad job.

Apparently Sweden makes Manic Pixie Dream Girls too. The set up here (curmudgeon tries to kill himself) feels so cliched, I spent most of the movie waiting for the other shoe to drop. Almost all of the laughs are cutesy too & his Dream Girl falls in love w/ him for no discernible reason. It's all done about as well as it can be since it is ultimately moving, but presumably left-wing critics excuse all the predictability they usually hate because of the Immigrants & Gays Will Save Us messaging.

Loved this book. I identify with this man so much…tired of people being lazy and incompetent; appreciating principles; living quietly. Sweet, charming little movie.

A well-told if conventional tale of a curmudgeonly old man whose young, but different, new neighbour chips away at his crusty outer shell to reveal a slightly less jaded old man. The film is shown almost exclusively from Ove's perspective, juggling both his past and present to get at why he is the way he is. Holm balances comedic suicide attempts with past tragedies in an engaging fashion despite some slower interludes along the way. The ending comes across as a bit provincial and cheesy.

I thought this was a good film adaptation of the novel. I've read the novel and I enjoyed the film. The main character is played well by Rolf Lassgard. I recommend it.

Arguably a copy of Gran Torino with a bit more humour, but good regardless. The tempo is ruined a bit near the end, and the relationship with the "bad guys" of the movie could have been developed better, but the movie still comes across as a charming introspective.

I was actually okay with everything until the last half hour - things started to feel rushed and the music overcompensated in parts. This certainly bares resemblance to Pixar's Up and Gran Torino. It's strengths are the balance between Ove's anger and genuine empathy for those around him, as well as the ensemble of side characters. The sudden urge for a villain is unneeded - the drama within Ove's struggle with suicide is strong enough to sustain an entire movie.

Terribly ordinary and uninventive film about 'crotchety old man'. Aside from some fairly amusing suicide jokes early on, the film is lite on laughs, as well as the predictable telegraphed drama, so it hardly works either way.

Reading the book this film is based on, I was thinking how it's written with a movie adaptation in mind. Lo and behold, the movie is already here. It's a bittersweet crowd-pleaser. Not much is changed in transition from novel to movie. Watching it felt redundant, since I already knew the story. Movie format doesn't add anything to it.
