Øjvind, a smallholder's boy, is a close friend with Marit, a farmer's girl, throughout their entire childhood. As an adolescent he one day recognizes that she has become a maiden, and that he has fallen in love with her. When he sees Marit dancing with Jon Halten, a farmer's son, he gets sad, and notices that when you start loving someone, you are not cheerful any more. He senses the social distance between himself and Marit and tries to compensate this by becoming the best pupil in the village

A rare Norwegian film from 1932 based on Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson's writings and directed by known Swedish film maker John W. Brunius. Unfortunately the movie fumbles it's way through the material and it's difficult to get into the characters and whatever they're faced with. Tries to use the Norwegian nature, but even there it struggles. Naturally there are some scenes with that old Norwegian charm to give some warm moments, but overall A Happy Boy (1932) isn't a very well-made national treasure.
