Pretty much the worst thing I've ever seen. But strangely compelling in its absolute awfulness. Quite likely the blandest, shittiest soundtrack of all time. Toad the Wet Sprocket? Fucking hell.

'independent record store"? Soundtrack contains: Gin Blossoms -Till I Hear It From You, The Cranberries - Liar, Toad The Wet Sprocket - Crazy Life, Better Than Ezra - Circle Of Friends, Cracker - Whole Lotta Trouble . Independent of what, talented musicians?

One of the great unfulfilled ambitions of my teen years was writing a one-day limited location youth dramedy ala Clerks or Breakfast Club, so I was a bit predispositioned to like this movie. A fair bit of nostalgia for the look and vibe and sound and style of the mid 90s also helps, which is a bit ironic because when I was actually these characters’ ages I’d probably have found them annoying. Now as an old man I find myself looking back at it fondly lol.

All I could think of, besides wondering who this was made for, was that I should be watching The Craft to scratch that 90's itch instead.

Beyond the modern Hollywood themes and their often glaring sentimentality (and the deliberately silly parts) there was a core of strong performances that had surprising depth and dealt with reality enough to make this worthwhile. Also lots of memorable lines, and some good cheap laughs.

A series of noisy vignettes that add up to nothing, despite attractive young cast. Disappointing outing from Moyle, who directed the more potent _Pump Up the Volume_.

Ridiculously schmaltzy and vapid, but strangely compelling. Its enthusiasm is infectious, and it boasts a pretty strong cast. For every shitty scene (like the seance, or whatever the fuck), there's something amazing like Ethan Embry tripping balls and hallucinating himself into a Gwar video. By no means is it anywhere close to perfection, but it's earned a mild cult following with good reason. More fun than you'd think.

Nothing really too surprising, here, but it's an oddly interesting kind of "slacker-fantasy" film (as in, dudes like me spent time dreaming of being able to work in a cool place like that). The "We need to raise this much or they're going to bulldoze the youth centre!" story is pretty worn out, though.

Even though I'm Generation X, I spent most of the movie wondering who was actually working in the store. While the plot had a few interesting dilemmas, most of them seemed an excuse to cue up another song from the soundtrack. I was hoping for a good comedy after spending a holiday with family, but the only time I cracked a smile was when GWAR appeared.

Self serious rumination is 90s hipster to its core for better and worse – this is BREAKFAST CLUB in a record store, and might have played better tweaked to a high school setting, because even for early 20 somethings, the characters here are an annoyingly juvenile bunch, and as the rep for “The Man” even states at one point “does anyone actually work here?” It’s difficult to be a complete grouch in the company of this fun cast, with Caulfield an unexpected stand-out as an over-the-hill pop star.

WHAT THE FUCK KIND OF BUSINESS IS THIS? Does anybody work? I remember the 90s, I mean, it was definitely this vapid, but companies still existed to make money, not to babysit a bunch of whiney 18 year olds. I should know, because I tried. It didn't work out so well for me.

It's like Clerks meets Breakfast Club. Crammed full of annoyingly weird characters and Gen X as hell. Still, it's a compelling watch as others have said. Avoid if you're put off by in-your-face quirkiness and irreverance.

A terrible paean to people who are both (1) chipperworthy hipsters and (2) normie hipsters. Back in the 1990s, people in the grips of their drama got jobs at record stores and shared dysfunction, but it was like "Slacker" a path to doom. This movie is a mile wide and an inch deep plus irritating. It is amazing the talent wasted on this insipid script.

Liv Tyler's iconic outfit and an odd star-making performance by Zellweger stand out in an otherwise poorly written "Breakfast Club in a record store." The frustration is that each character consists of one or two cliches, and nothing else. Sure, they dance around and have a fake funeral (my god) but they are wholly uninteresting.

EMPIRE RECORDS is kind of a Hollywood-ized version of CLERKS, an attempt to reveal a generation's soul by way of broadly appealing, easily relatable character archetypes. The film's mischievous side emerges in its weird non-sequiturs and snippy one-liners, but its true legacy is as a museum of the trends, style, and argot of its time, set in a soon-to-be extinct bastion of youth culture.

So... the Breakfast Club of the 90s? I completely understand the comaprisons, because Empire Records is a painfully obvious attempt to cash in on the formula. If sappy and nostalgic teen movie is what you're looking for you could certainly do worse and there is a certain degree of charm to the hangout dramadey style, but ultimately it's just a caricature of better movies.

Somewhere in the 90's between Dazed and Confused, Clerks, and High Fidelity lies Empire Records, and that's not a terrible place to be. It's sincere charm tries so hard to get you to like it, and you can't help but like it, even if it can't quite run with the big dogs. Rory Cochrane, of course, is the true star and heart.

Enjoyed the ridiculous Rex Manning video and a few lines here and there. However, most of the rest just dwells in cliches, the film takes shortcuts to elicit emotion, and more often than not, the comedy comes off as odd rather than funny. I probably would have enjoyed this in high school, but not so much all these years later.

This movie was better than I expected. Renée Zellweger actually looks *good* in this movie. It's funny at times and very warm during others. The last 15 minutes or so are a bit cliche'd and Rory Cochrane plays his typical extremely predictable, introverted self. Worth watching once and stopping on it when you're flipping channels.

My love for this movie is really just some sick fascination I have with Gen Xers. Being born in '83, I barely missed the cut and am lumped into the Millennials, but, man, Gen X were so cool to me. Mid-90's, when I was in high school, I fawned over the culture of grunge, the clothing styles, and the fierce independence of those guys just 5-7 years older than I was. This film is THE Gen X movie. It's up there with Reality Bites, Hackers, and High Fidelity. Not that great, but the feels!

15 years ago I rated this "40". I have to say that I liked the film a lot better on this re-watch. It’s still clearly a lesser entry when compared to the other record store film - ”High Fidelity”. This one is harmless fun with a solid soundtrack and an interesting cast of up-and-comers Zellweger, LaPaglia, Tyler et al. It also serves as a timecapsule of the 90’s and contains tons of fun details for nostalgia junkies.
