Emancipation

Despite some exceptional performances and below-the-line achievements, "Emancipation" fails to overcome its deeply flawed narrative and inability to provide the necessary complexity for a resonant exploration of character and theme. While some powerful moments capture true anxiety, the hollowness that lingers artificially constructs the forward momentum, leaving the audience unable to connect with the overall tone.

Psst...Will's actually very good in this. In fact, he's probably the best thing not borrowed from better, more confident films. Just wish they had the guts to go full black and white, because unfortunately this looks like dirty dishwater.

A mixed bag that somehow lacks enough dramatic weight. It's well made, well acted, and powerful at times, but Will Smith does not need to be the hero at every turn. The pacing of the last half hour felt off, and the ultra slick production doesn't fit.

I wonder if Will Smith will be invited to the Oscar this year.
