Elling

This dramady shouldn't work nearly as well as it does. The actors, as the odd couple Elling and Kjell Bjarne, are both outstanding, and it's a testiment to the performance that Elling - who's actually a pretty unlikeable guy if you think about it - is turned into such a loveable character. A truly sweet, and thankfully schmaltz-free, little wonder.

A nice little film, but nothing monumental. That's the Norwegian film industry in a nutshell, right there.

Sickeningly optimistic.

Not bad, but...the dark side of Elling never comes out, unlike in the book.

It's a very entertaining and endearing film because we enjoy the characters immensely, played to perfection by Ellefsen and Nordin.

On things we take for granted.

Elling is the perfect Norwegian comedy. It's funny moments hide a more profound theme of two mentally challenged people finding their way in the world after their leaving a mental institution.

Uplifting and cute.
