Uncommonly clunky for a Pixar film - everything from allegory, messaging, plotting, and yes, world-building, is glaringly haphazard. I really wanted to love this (and Mamoudou Athie’s perpetually likable screen presence goes a long way here), but this is about as ho-hum and ineffective as Pixar can get.

Pixar and Disney are losing their magic, it couldn't jerk any tears from me (and very little from my daughter). The animation is alright, and some Indian music choices are interesting. The city design was cool too. But the rest was on one side forgettable and message-driven, and on the other side (whether this is intentional or unintentional I do not know) has a dangerous discourse. It treats immigrants as "fundamentally" different, rather than only culturally. This I did not appreciate.

It's quite uninspired and unoriginal, but it's got some charm regardless and some of the ideas it explores are cool, even though the main allegory doesn't quite work lol. However, the pacing was awful, the script leaves a lot to be desired and the characters are pretty shallow, even if they get some "depth" added to them (or one of them, more like) at points in the movie. It's visually good though, and i wasn't bored or anything, just underwhelmed. It's mediocre and one of Pixar's weakest.

Y'know what, I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna go 85 on this one. Following the Pixar formula of "what if _____ had feelings?", "Elemental" scores with an engaging story that a lot of the audience will relate to, some worthwhile material for the adults (though the social commentary isn't as strong as, say, Zootopia), and at its core, a love story that risks running the Romeo & Juliet timeframe but ultimately feels earned by the end. They might fumble their metaphor, but it didn't hurt it for me.

Pretty much exactly what I expected with a small side of disappointment. The moment or two of genuine heart, plus Thomas Newman’s score (minus the “spa pop” track thrown in there) kept me from completely writing this film off. Other quibbles: (1) flashbacks felt like a shortcut - a good story does not need them (2) show me characters that grow and change, not just get their wants and dreams met (3) usually surprises in Pixar stories lead somewhere - the ones in Elemental went nowhere

It's a fine simple tale, beautifully animated as always, and I'd never go so far as to call the writers at Pixar lazy, but in their long list of "opposites on adventure" stories, this one sure is blatant. Especially since the "New York Melding pot" allegory has been done before and better in Zootropolis, and the same goes for the "burden of cultural herritage" in last year's Turning Red. Also, there's something problematic about depicting ethnicity as incompatible traits.

I was left with the feeling that the Pixar formula was once again smacking me across the face, this time with the help of Shakespeare. Don't get me wrong, Elemental was a good movie, it just never absorbed me the way Pixar's best do. I got my laughs, and four opportunities to cry my eyes out. You never got me down, Ray.

The whole theming of it with the city of natural foes etc reminded me heavily of Zootopia, albeit with some of that film's more interesting mystery elements swapped out more with straightforward romance. It's all a bit clunky and obvious (and why the hell does Fire Town have pipes that carry water to it at all??), but has a very nice audiovisual presentation, with some beautiful, warmly colorful and complex visuals and several "music video" sequences that are moving and well done.

It's nothing boldly new for Pixar but I found myself charmed by this movie. The animation is stunning, the premise of an elemental world is explored satisfyingly, I love how the film commits to showcasing the immigrant experience, and the central relationship is probably the most compelling romance that I've seen in family animation.

Better than expected given how perfunctory and Pixar tick-boxy the trailer made it look. It does in fact go on to hit pretty much every standard Pixar trope throughout its runtime, but it does so with such confidence and style that much of its conventionality can be forgiven. Beautifully animated, full of charm and sweetness, it kept a cinema packed full of families including my own entertained, so can only be assessed a doing its job nicely.

Didn’t expect to enjoy this as much as I did after the lukewarm reviews of the majority. Definitely picked up way more around the halfway mark and got to me. Some of the humour is hit and miss, but the emotional core and the themes resonated with me. Some creative uses of elements and animation too.

Not nearly as mediocre as I was lead to believe. Far from Pixar’s best, but FAR from their worst. I appreciate was Sohn and co. were trying to do here with the immigration angle, but it’s actually quite moving, as was some of the romance. Nothing here feels too forced or silly. I thought both of the leads were likable and well acted, and the animation continues to be stunning! I liked the humor, themes, pacing and I thought the resolution was very satisfying. Imperfect, solid storytelling.

"Elemental" is a stunning film that weaves together a powerful immigrant narrative and a compelling love story. The animation is breathtaking, showcasing both photoreal water effects and nuanced 2D character animation. The voice acting, especially Lewis as Ember, is top-notch, and Newman's magnificent score adds to the film's appeal. While the script has some groan-inducing puns and Athie's portrayal of Wade can be sentimental, these imperfections don't overshadow the overall charm of the movie.

I'm a sucker for this kind of thing. Pixar movies almost always make me cry. But, you know, I think the messaging in this film is all wrong. Seems to be about how immigration and mixing is bad. That was my takeaway, at least. Something about Muslims staying in the Middle East unless they can fully adopt Western culture and ideals? Right?

Thing is, this isn't the worst Pixar movie, but it's the most insincere and childish. It's hard to word, but the way dialogue and jokes are written and performed throughout is just so patronizing, it's a writing style I felt in Coco and some recent Pixar films, but this is the one where it took me aback and seeing Spider-Verse the same day in the theater later, yeah, I really feel Pixar has worsened when writing characters and worlds. +5 bonus points for Joe Pera plant.

At times it feels scientifically designed to be emotionally engaging or even a little manipulative, however there's no denying the great animation and catchy premise, not to mention some gorgeous sequences and a handful of really powerful, moving moments that have been perfectly set up in advance. There's also something very potent in the will-they-won't-they dynamic of the two main characters, and the themes of familial burdens, individuality, immigration, xenophobia and classism are weighty.

Perfectly inoffensive and lovely to look at. Pixar is consistently proving the power of storytelling lately because they seem to be pouring their resources into the design of their projects over their narratives, letting their stories reduce to tight, unproblematic, but ultimately unoriginal offerings. Lo and behold, no matter how creative your film is aesthetically, it still largely lands hollow; the overwhelming consensus on ELEMENTAL proves it.

Below average, formula Pixar fare about things like immigration and prejudice. Parts of its messages about xenophobia, etc, are somewhat muddled by the fact that the different elemental groups here have legitimate reason to see the others as existential threats. It's nice enough, but disappointing from Pixar.

Reliably enjoyable and engaging Pixar effort may be a victim of the studio’s own success – there’s nothing particularly glaring about this paean to acceptance and individuality except that it’s not especially unique or individual in its execution, feeling more like a compilation of scenes, ideas and characters already used (and better) in previous films; a lack of genuine stars behind the mike (excluding O'Hara) tends to make the vocal performances lack a certain pop.

It doesn't reach the thematic heights that past Pixar films do, but Pixar still knows how to make animated films that are a cut above. I do think this one is a little bit more cookie cutter in regards to the plot, but there are still some great visual gags, subtle humor, and absolutely beautiful animation. I doubt, in the grand scheme of Pixar films, it will be as revered as older classics, but it's still a fun experience.

It's a really beautifully drawn movie with some touching scenes and some incredibly cringey scenes. Like when the fire girl firmly says "no" to hanging out with the water boy, but he sees that she smiled slightly, and assumes that means a "yes", and shouts the time and the place as she walks off. And of course, that works... Stuff like that really doesn't teach kids good lessons, no means no.

Pixar has a pretty consistent level of quality (with a few missteps), even if that standard is dropping. Maybe that's just me, I don't know. I don't get as excited for Pixar as I used to. Nothing here really stands out but that doesn't mean it's bad. It's Pixar by the numbers. It's emotional at the end, the animation is good, even if I'm a little tired of their style, it does a couple of neat things with its premise, has a good message, etc.

If anything, Pixar has gotten stronger at tugging at the emotional heartstrings over the years. But they have gotten weaker at getting laughs and creating iconic characters. This movie is good but as always graded on a Pixar curve that has been tough for the last several movies. I thought the animation was a little too similar to Inside Out.

Elemental is a visually stunning movie with a core set of characters that keep you hooked. There is a lot to relate to in this movie. Hard working middle class family in search of a better life, anxiety trying to live up to others expectations and the curveball that love throws into the mix. Truly a delightful movie and the way the elements interact in the scenes within the city are why animation is such a breathtaking genre of films. Movie magic as it truly should be.

Didn't find it as magical as other Pixar movies. There has been so many bright color animation films that's come out in recent years, even if you combine elementals for a extra shining effect, you still feel you've seen the gimmick before. The story is fine, if not obvious. But with that negativity, the actual viewing experience is a positive. Nice family time bonding, with a film full of energy and light. They have nailed formula. Just wish they had something more unique to built it around.

W4E2P0S1V2M2A2R2. Agree with others that the concept was only really useful as a vehicle for the (awesome) animation. For the story, beyond the basic premise that different groups of people disliked each other, the allegory was dicey. But parts of the story still got me good (even if they were derivative of other, better Pixars), the characters were lovable, and the animation and music was wonderful.

Elemental is Pixar's/Sohn's clichéd contribution to the RomCom genre. The voice acting was fine. Newman's ethnic hodgepodge score is on the nose in a distracting way. The animation was okay, though a little unimpressive considering Pixar's technical upgrades specifically because of this film, and I wasn't particularly keen on the design of the elements. Ultimately it's an animated film about immigrant struggles that lacks nuance, opposition and originality. Disappointing, especially for Pixar.

I thought this was better than its reviews would indicate. At first, I didn't warm up to the visual style of the characters and Wade in particular, but both grew on me. In my opinion, the film works well enough as a immigration/coming-of-age dramedy, but its biggest fault is that you expect it to have something more; as if e.g. a whole subplot about the floodgate was removed. The ending was emotional and I could see myself re-watching the film, even if it's not one of Pixar's strongest.

Someone who has worked retail was clearly involved in writing the script. :D The first half of the film was very preachy and heavy-handedly hammered in the segregation plot point. Thankfully the latter half was more interpersonal and more heartfelt in tone. I left the theatre with tears in my eyes. Too bad about the hamfisted ideological homily at the beginning. Felt like a 10yo was giving a lecture on why “thing x” is bad without understanding any of the nuances of the subject.

The other Hollywood animation companies have caught up with Pixar, so this entry, which may have been an A 10 years ago. Is a solid B-. The animation, as usual for Pixar, is beautiful. Element City is chock full of visual gags about the differing elements living together. It's the story that holds the movie back. Too predictable with story beats you can see a mile away. It was interesting to see an "emotionally available" male be the love interest though. Kudos to that. PSI: 76
