Electric Dreams

I shouldn't admit that I like this movie as much as I do. It probably had to do with my teenage crush on Virginia Madsen and pure lust for the soundtrack. The story itself is pedestrian romance and laughably implausible technophobia.

1984: A silly, shallow rom-com about a guy too embarrassed to tell his GF that he bought a personal computer. Virginia Madsen is a cutie. 2023: A cautionary tale about an emotionally unstable AI that quickly progresses from making goofy art to controlling and almost ruining a man’s life. Virginia Madsen is a cutie.

While the film may feel dated in some respects, it offers a fascinating glimpse into the early days of AI and smart technology, as well as thought-provoking ideas about the intersection of art, love, and artificial intelligence. Electric Dreams may not be a classic, but it remains an intriguing and enjoyable watch for fans of 1980s cinema and those interested in the evolution of AI.

Cliche but cute.

Great soundtrack.

As 80s as 80s can get, and I've seen Max Headroom: The Movie (the extended version, mind you). As sappy as the romance is, the charm is still there, and the fear of a computer stealing your girl is definitely for this time. All things considered, for the 80s aficionado, this film is timeless.

Wow. What a pile of cheese ridden rubbish.

A cheesy product of the 80s MTV era, directed by the guy who did the music video for Billie Jean, with a plot that's silly on paper and on screen. Miles is the love stricken wimp and Madeline is the classy girl next door, but OH NO, Miles' new computer has become sentient and, not only that, falls in love with Madeline and swoons her with electronic music!! The romance and technophobia is so fucking 80s it hurts, but its retro quality is fun and likable. Watch it at 1am for proper effect.

I don't see the draw that others have for this movie. On top of being out-dated the acting is horrible and the story is ultra-bland.

I haven't seen this in over 10 years yet still think of it fondly.

One of those guilty pleasure 80's movies that you have to watch if you happen to catch it while flipping channels. Great soundtrack.
