Edward, My Son (1949) is one I saw half a lifetime ago. I remembered it as more powerful than this, but this time around the heavy drama didn't really connect emotionally in the way this was aiming for. Spencer Tracy plays a brutal business who is just as brutal with his family, and it's all downhill from a human perspective. Strong moral, but George Cukor doesn't quite hit the right buttons to make it a melodramatic classic it probable deserved to be.

Turgid, ice-cold drama not helped by the irritating gimmick of building the events around key years in 'Edward''s life (who we never meet) - a more conventionally structured depiction of Tracy and Kerr's Macbeth-like rise to nobility might have been more effective. As it is, the stage origins are painfully apparent, with the episodic structure further removing the chance for any involvement in the tale, and negating an interesting performance from Tracy as the sociopathic social climber.

Tracy is good, but the Morley play is pretty heavy-handed. Also . . . unlike many critics, I thought Deborah Kerr's performance was mannered, and it left me unmoved.
