Plantagenet king Edward II hands the power-craving nobility the perfect excuse by taking as lover besides his diplomatic wife, the French princess Isabel, not an acceptable lady at court but the ambitious Piers Gaveston, who uses his favor in bed even to wield political influence - the stage is set for a palace revolt which sends the gay pair from the throne to a terminal torture dungeon. Didn't understand a word. Love Jarman's use of surreal disconnected spaces, natural yet blooming lights that balance the authentic with the theatric, post-modernist anachronisms that innately create some gleeful disruption of the status quo of conservative theatric interpretation yet provide analogues to timeless archetypes and the wars they wage. Relentlessly faithful all the while being unflinchingly subversive, the dimlit scene of many men's hunched asses? Entering the dream but make it gay

Eduardo II estreava há 30 anos no Reino Unido. Como AMO o Jarman, não tem nada no estilo dele que não goste e aqui ele atravessa o epitome do queer como fez com cada obra sua. BlurayRip no MakingOff.

Above all it is simply beautiful (in its language, staging, lighting, photography, ST, choreography, and performance). For all Jarman's anachronisms [as well as allusions to the 1991 Iraq invasion, Stonewall, etc.], the device is tasteful and interesting but only ornamental. Compare the political (and formal) sophistication of Fassbinder for example, and the exposition and conception of historical motive forces seems not only uncritical but arguably proto-fascist.

A lean, incisive, moving adaptation, the immediacy of its tone perfectly tuned to its deftly streamlined version of Marlowe. Edward and Gaveston become central figures in a sort of queer mythos that Jarman is not so much inventing as underlining for us. Stylish even in its most potentially off-putting choices, timeless in its depiction of the queer experience, while still remaining a time capsule of a specific moment in queer history to which I'm grateful to have been granted some access.

Edward II is a bold retelling of Marlowe's classic play, featuring a standout performance by Tilda Swinton and art direction that makes the most out of a very limited budget.

Unwatchable. One of the worst movies ever made.
