Dire telling of what should have been an interesting and inspirational story dips into every contrived and manipulative cliché in the book; a ghastly, overdone 80s synth score (sounding like warmed over Vangelis) doesn't help matters. Overstated, pantomime-level performances from all involved (other than a depressingly bewildered looking Walken) capped by Egerton's irritating, nails-on-chalkboard rendition of the Little Engine That Could. A career nadir for all concerned.

I'll be honest, I really liked Eddie The Eagle. I mean I can definitely acknowledge that it's cliched, silly, and has little depth, but it has an awesome soundtrack, great chemistry and is just a good spot of fun in a dark time in the world. It's a great way to escape, and one I can recommend.

Eddie the Eagle is a harmlessly enjoyable film with a feel good vibe that should entertain the whole family. Taron Edgerton is a remarkable casting choice and he shows his versatility and charisma with a performance that you naturally root for. This film is riddled with cliches and it offers nothing new to the sports drama formulae. But the characters are likeable, the humour is light hearted and overall this is a pleasant and easy watch.

Naturally in the likes of Cool Runnings. It has soul and wins you over with Egerton's charm. Nothing spectacular but a good family movie. *Good

It does just want you expect it to do. It's not a bad thing as it is enjoyable, but you won't find anything spectacular here. I thought some of the CGI looked too fake, and Hugh Jackman's character (whilst he's okay) could have been played by anybody. It does have an uplifting ending to have you cheering as you exit the theatre, but you really haven't seen anything great.

It wants to be Cool Runnings, but it's way more average. There are some pleasant moments and the third act is actually pretty solid, but overall it's just mostly an by the numbers underdog sports movie.

It's COOL RUNNINGS only with a British skier. I mean, exactly--right down to the disapproving dad who triumphantly shows off his pro-Eddie T-shirt at the end. It's well-directed, highly likable, and easy to digest, though, and Egerton and Jackman turn in a couple of spirited, genuinely engaging performances.

Cool Runnings for skiing (actually the same Olympics), starring nerdy Billy Elliot and the coach from Mighty Ducks. Despite being presumably easy to write, it's still pretty funny and enjoyable. Notably, the one cliche it doesn't include is the end credits info dump on the characters' futures, since Eddie failed to qualify for another Olympic games, went bankrupt, and then silent his time appearing on British television as a C-list celeb.

C'est une belle histoire gâchée par le spectacle systémique Américain. Hugh Jackman en est l'incarnation la plus pittoresque. Sa descente alcoolisée noyée dans les effets-spéciaux gras et moches, est la scène qui gâche le film.

Not bad as underdog sports movies go, but as a Finn who has actually watched his share of ski-jump competitions, this looked fake and they had definitely bent and simplified history quite a lot. For example, the Finnish champion Matti Nykänen is portrayed as some kind of philosophical zen-master while the reality was quite different. But, If you are not familiar with the real events or ski-jumping in general, you might enjoy this a lot more.

Fine. Perhaps sweet in places. But the real Eddie Edwards was a bit of a cartoon character, so there really wasn't much to work with here. Hugh Jackman also phones in a performance so generic his character could have been replaced by a plank of wood with a smiley face and some sunglasses on it.

The true story provides an opportunity (taken entertaining advantage of) to twist the run-of-the-mill cinderella story, but the film still stumbles with the weight of a few particularly tired tropes (particularly the alcoholic manager). In the end, the film is dominated by Taron Egerton's Eddie, a terrifically infectious character more than capable of carrying the film to its effective emotional climax.

W3E1P1S0V2M1A1R1. Cookie cutter sports film, with a less interesting sport than most (if only because it's a solo sport and thus they had to create drama from whole cloth with Hugh Jackman's cliche coach and a bunch of fellow ski-jumpers who pop in and out without any discernible motives or identities). Nice to look at, though, and palatable casual viewing.

Eddie the Eagle is tarnished goods. The filmmakers don't trust us to understand what Eddie is feeling about the Olympics without blaring a musical message from Hall and Oates on the soundtrack, "you make my dreams come true." Here's what is true. The reality trumps whatever his missed opportunity of a movie dreams up.

A by-the-numbers sports dramedy, EDDIE THE EAGLE lifts most of its story beats wholesale from other Olympic underdog tales (COOL RUNNINGS being the most egregious victim of theft). It's a sturdy formula, however, and when viewed in the right frame of mind, it's an irresistibly cornball feel-good story. Taran Egerton and Hugh Jackman's endearing performances are bright spots..

Eddie the Eagle is a feel good sports movie about a guy who dreams big and makes those dreams a reality. Taron Egerton is great in this film. He is relatable and funny. Hugh Jackman didn't really do anything for me in this role. He seems like a perfect fit for this role but he didn't ever seem like he was there. The only thing this movie did well was that it brought this interesting true story to light and that makes me want to learn more about the real Eddie, but I wouldn't watch it again.

A pleasant distraction whilst it lasts, but not too much more than that. Egerton is pretty good, and there are some nice moments dotted here and there, with a magically dreadful CGI ski-jump crash thrown in for fun. Ultimately it's not quite funny or smart enough and Jackman's completely fictional coach character feels exactly that. I almost expected him to be a figment of Edwards imagination, fading into snowy air at the climax! A bit overly cute and too-the-beat, but likeable for what it is.

Eddie the Eagle (2016) might be a contender for #1 cheesy feel-good movie of 2016. And that's coming from someone brought-up in a country that actually takes ski jumping serious! I even forgive them for making us Norwegians the bad guys to deliver the charming nearly-crippling story of Eddie the Eagle.

It hits all the story & character beats you'd expect & feels very formulaic, in general. That's not to say it's not enjoyable, though. Egerton is very likable, if a little too silly at times, and makes his character's journey compelling. I could probably pick apart many different aspects of this film, but it seems pointless. It achieves what it wants to be: a lighthearted and charming telling of a true story without a hint of cynicism. I didn't love it, but I certainly can't hate it.

If you don't know anything about ski-jumping, you'll probably find it a fun feel good film. If you're a ski-jumping fan, you'll hate the factual errors and the simplified version of ski-jumping depicted in the film. Too many factual errors completely took me out of the film, not to mention the whole film feels like a huge cliché. Taron Edgerton is probably the only positive thing I found about the film. Shame.

But Eddie was one of those rare sorts who operated with a patient assurance that the sweetest accomplishments in life don't have to be medal-earning ones. Sometimes simply staying up on your feet--or skis--is more than enough. It's the joy of doing, not the rush of winning that's the key here. Eddie the Eagle tells us that following your passions and reaching goals that everyone else says you cannot reach, no matter how small, is a valuable thing indeed. (pluggedin.com)
