An alright concept that might have worked better with someone else as the lead (ANYONE else).

Suffers from the fact it came out around the same time as Truman Show, and also from the fact that it's bad.

Nothing special, but in its defense this probably could have been a whole lot worse. It is what it is... a movie spoofing reality TV. Everything you think would happen does. The one thing I learn out of this is how to do a new version of the Chicken Dance. That this movie is over 2 hours is unacceptable. It does not need to be that long. I didn't laugh at all during it, but I also didn't fall asleep. Date made it through it without falling asleep which says something.

That the Truman Show was made so well makes this look entirely pedestrian by comparison.

Interesting premise hurt by its proximity to The Truman Show wouldn't stand on it's own regardless. Average at best.

I remember when I first saw the trailer for this in 1999 and thought a TV show about some guy's daily mundane life was a totally ridiculous premise for a film. Watching it for the first time 10 years later, it appears I was 100% wrong about that. What a strange society we live in.

An interesting movie, coming out just before reality tv shows became a big hit and is now standard on just about every tv station. Woody Harrelson as always an underrated actor plays a pivotal role in this movie as Ed's brother. The movie is hilarious, but at some points sad, and even further can be downright dull. I would see it again to catch parts I missed it is one of those films. By no means would I go spend money to own it.

This was perceived as a ripoff of _The Truman Show_ because it came out just a few months afterwards; actually, of course, this had been in production long before Weir's movie came out. This picture still isn't as good, but it's a funny, creative, and entertaining little statement on how the modern media creates a sort of SuperHeisenberg Effect. Like all Ron Howard movies, this is very white-bread, but I won't hold that against it *too* much

Mildly similar to The Truman Show, but not nearly as good and with a more comedic sensibility. Watchable but certainly not a must-see or anything.

Keeps threatening to break out into something more insightful and interesting, ala NETWORK or THE TRUMAN SHOW, but ultimately plays it resolutely safe and straightforward, doing surprisingly (and frustratingly) little with its intriguing premise. Perhaps this bit harder back in 1999, but the “advancements” in reality TV since then further mutes its already superficial attacks on the media, network television etc. A likable cast can’t really catch fire under Howard’s meat-and-potatoes direction.

Top badass moment? Discovering that watching this film is like disappointing sex*. You suddenly realise you’re not really enjoying it as much as you expected and when you start to think about it more, it gets even worse. (*Obviously I only have a second-hand knowledge of what this is like.) And falling off a table onto a cat whilst having sex; someone actually thought that's funny and got paid in real money for thinking it up? 1 fluffy but not especially cute cat, no chainsaws or decapitations.

Comparing this against Truman Show is brutal and not fair. They both has similarities but it actually very different stories. But all conflict and ending was weak and easy. But movie is still enjoyable.

I think that the ironic thing about EdTV is that no matter how over the top it tried to be, it didn't even come close to the reality TV stuff happened since. It has a good cast and Howard reined in his quirkiness at a level that is not puts you off. There were some really good lines here and there. If you forget about the Reality TV angle; the main thing is the amount of skeletons in the closet for each and every family. It is no wonder that we have this pathological need to know about others.

An interesting premise that parodies reality TV shows, which is led by a decent performance by McConaughey. However, The Truman Show does it better.

This movie actually stands out as one of the few occasions that Matthew McConaughey has been the lead in a film and not been leaning on something in the poster. Needless to say, I was impressed.

EDtv is a strange combination of the ambitious and the mundane, and one of the cases where a satirical premise was entrusted to a director without bite: Ron Howard. It's a likable enough film, and Matthew McConaughey is at his best playing this kind of average-Joe role, but the overlength (123 minutes) and the fairly bland script keep it from being more than an agreeable, forgettable entertainment. Some good supporting performances, particularly Martin Landau, but an overall letdown.
