The mysterious and charismatic Russian-born Nikolai Luzhin is a driver for one of London's most notorious organized crime families of Eastern European origin. The family is part of the Vory V Zakone criminal brotherhood. Headed by Semyon--whose courtly charm as the welcoming proprietor of the plush Trans-Siberian restaurant impeccably masks a cold, brutal core--the family is tested by Semyon's volatile son and enforcer, Kirill, who is more tightly bound to Nikolai than to his own father. I thought the entire movie was too predictable, I could easily guess everything what was going too happen. That's probably why i was pretty much disappointed by this so-called 'Dostojevski' meets 'The Departed', maybe I was just expecting too much after reading all the positive reviews. But the most annoying were the stereotypes: there are only 3 kinds of russians according to this movie; Mobsters or prostitutes, and if they're not, they just have to be KGB.

Cronenberg's recent fixation on brooding gangsters is really fucking boring. I feel like I've seen this movie a hundred times before, and I couldn't wait for it to be over. Let's get back to original ideas like drug-addled twin gynecologists and guys with videotapes in their stomachs.

Cronenberg's best in my opinion. Mortense, Watts and Cassel are all absolutely amazing. It's such an intense film that touches upon violence and sex only the way Cronenberg can. I wouldn't be surprised steam room fight becomes terribly famous just for how raw and brutal it is. Absolutely essentially Cronenberg film.

Very bleak, perhaps a bit too bleak for my taste, but that doesn't detract from the fact that it's a well-made film with great acting and a very compelling story. It's interesting to see how Cronenberg has grown and matured as a filmmaker, from the bizarre prostheses that were a hallmark of his earlier films to the brutal, realistic violence that colors his most recent works. Mortensen is a phenomenal actor and having known a few Russians in my day, he does a great job with the part.

This is less a movie about escaping one's past, and more a film about securing a future. The direction is not distracting, and subtle. The focused and tight plot make it go by quickly. There are multiple themes, but Cronenberg doesn't beat you over the head with them. The acting is sweet in all the right places. Watts is humanistic and real, Mortenson is intense and composed. It's ending may seem unresolved at first, until you realize the story that needed to be told is over.

Cronenberg HAS to start writing his own scripts again. Even more disappointing than the previous one, this has so many implausible twists and turns it becomes quite ridiculous, perhaps intentionally. Aside from the infamous violent scenes, there's no real reason to watch this, and I'm still waiting for that once great director to find his new path in a more satisfying way.

Naomi Watts is absolutely gorgeous, and she is superb in this film. The entire cast is great, and acting all around is great. Interesting story with lots of violence, intrigue and surprises. Viggo Mortensen was awesome as the mob enforcer. Armin Mueller-Stahl was a charismatic mob boss, and his douche bag son was played very convincingly by Vincent Cassel. The story is primed for the next installment and I can't wait to see what happens next.

I'm not really a fan of Steven Knight's previous Academy Award nominated screenplay Dirty Pretty Things. But this one truly delivers. Great script with some powerful performances by Mortensen, Cassel and, as good as always, Mueller-Stahl. I'm a bit tired of Cronenberg's violent body images, but this movie definitely works.

Eastern Promises is a well written film. It is powerfully presented, and show's just how things work inside the mob, and the people surrounding it. It's also cool to see a movie thats not about the italian mafia. Mortensen in a absolutely incredible performance along with Watts and Cassel. An absolute must for the crime/gangster film fan.

I had never seen Deliverance, and I remember asking some people about it (including my parents) who hemmed and hawed but never mentioned the brutal pig rape scene. How do you not immediately mention that? It's the first thing I think of and the first thing I blurt out when someone brings it up. That being said. Eastern Promises: Taint!

Astonishing and Oscar-worthy performance by Viggo Mortensen. Vincent Cassel is alsow good. The movie passes by on a calm pase but doens't get boring at all. The fight at the bathhouse is incredible. Thanks to the cinematography it has a particular kind of sphere hanging above the film. The somewhat open ending was a bit a downside , but gives you a chance to decide what happens.

Hollywood has under-utilized the Russian Mafia for far too long, and this is the new standard. Aside from the narration, which I could have done without, it was a tight, brutal film with outstanding performances from Mortensen, Cassel, and Mueller-Stahl. The best fight scene I've ever seen, grueling in a way that I haven't seen since Oldboy.

The ghost of Cronenberg lingers over Eastern Promises, but the man's usual tricks are decidedly absent. Eastern Promises is a pretty tame story that gets its thrills through spooky accents, male frontal nudity, and ultraviolence. Cronenberg has left out his animatronic violence and dreamlike lighting, for a more traditional crime film that has enough blessings to get by on its mediocore story. It's one of the few films in 2007 that can get by on being normal, because there is something strang

Yeah, Mortensen is good in this but it really works because Mueller Stahl is the final word as the head of the family. His authority is totally believed and even though he's an evil bastard I can't help but like the guy. Maybe that's because I like borscht.

Not that brilliant as some may believe. The performances of Mortenssen and Watts are great, but Vincent Cassel was definitely over the top. And for a movie, opening with somebody getting butchered, and with a most exciting fight sequence in the middle, the ending was one big dissapointment. A cheesy ending for a Cronenberg film, no way that works out.

Problem with Cronenberg abandoning his classic themes and style is, we end up with a a rather mediocre director very much stuck in the 80s with a quite impressive makeup team...so this movie is basically an 80s thriller with a bit of extra gore. Sadly, forgettable.

Another unflinching look at violence from Cronenberg, this time turning his lens on the Russian mafia. Like A History of Violence, it examines the tension between actions and a person's nature, and how those things define them, and combines these themes with Cronenberg's well-worn tropes of body horror. It's a razor-sharp film thematically, even if its surface elements are less inspired.

If you're looking for "A History of Violence" don't look for it in "Eastern Promises". The film is a let-down after David Cronenberg's finest film. There are some good performances here (Viggo Mortnensen, Naomi Watts, Vincent Cassel, etc.) but I'm really not even sure why Cronenberg wanted to tell this story. It's sad and depressing. It's slow and boring. There's just not much here to get excited about.

Since his style shift, Cronenberg seems to shape his movies more along the lines of old classics, which is a blessing for most cinephiles. Mortensen is sharp as razor as Luzhin, which is probably best role to date. Still the story seems uncompleted, and leaves the audience a bit disappointed. Cronenberg should make this into a trilogy.

A movie that holds few surprises and barely has any conflicts that make the stock characters really come alive. It just slowly moves along, unfolding more or less how you'd expect a movie of this type to do. Watts' character was so unimportant it borders on negligible. Mortensen is pretty much perfect for the role of brooding anti-hero. The bath-house scene is immensely badass, but to me the only notheworthy part in a rather lifeless crime-drama. Solid film, all in all. Viggo Mortensen was excellent. At times I felt that Watts' character was pushing the believability envelope, but that is explained in the film. The other main characters (cassell & mueller-stahl) were well constructed and played out. It's a realistic and vivid look into the russian mafia subculture, and is presented in a very blunt--here it is, deal with it--way. the violence, which seems to border on over the top, actually feels real and necessary.

While Viggo leads the pack, the majority of these characters scare the shit out of me. I've seen plenty of organized crime films, but few have the effect that this has. Of course, this has more to do with the fantastic performances than the story. Eastern Promises struggles to say much more than human trafficking is bad and the vory v zakone are scarey. Nice Russian stereotyping. Viggo mortensen's cool acting. I liked the father, Kiril, the uncle and even the minor characters as well. The only thing I did not like is that the film did not reach a conclusion, it was like an infinitesimal piece of a big yet not super surprising story. *Spoiler* Suppose Naomi Watts did not exist. The story would go like, Mafia kills mafia, mafia rapes women, mafia kills the illegitimate children, agent continues to report and that's it...

Viggo Mortensen is great as Nikolaj Luzhin and keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout the entire movie. Both Mortensen and Cassel play their roles to perfection and you could really feel the motivation behind both characters. I did however feel that the plot, at times, was rather rushed and the semi-twist as the ending seemed just kinda thrown in there. The only reason I could live with it was that it gave Mortensen's character more depth. Whatever rush there was, was saved by the ending.
