Dying to Survive

Better than it's generic plot should be due to good acting by its sympathetic players, pacing and not being overly emotive. Engaging. Enjoy.

Successful in being both funny and tear-jerking, making it a decent Asian dramedy movie.

I think that the story here is really quite interesting. Yet I really wanted more out of it. Too often I felt like this movie took the easy way out, picking cheap entertainment over insight and refusing to develop its characters. Even the main character, about whom we know the most, is not really all that complex or human; he's mostly just a vehicle for the story to happen. That's not to say I didn't enjoy this, though. It's a pretty easy watch, and it has its entertaining moments.

The film feels cheapened by cinematography and editing that makes it look like a made-for-TV flick, but the main story thread is compelling and the acting isn't bad either.

It turned from comedy to serious quite quickly, wasn't expecting this to be a serious film.
