I saw the 86 minute cut and it was 50 minutes too long. There's some visual flair, largely of the orange and red kind, but it's impossible to care about anything else. Cardboard characters and half-baked mysticism drag the narrative into a wretched hole of boredom and frustration. John Matshikiza has the acting talent of a park statue. This is cinematic purgatory. Beware.

Directed with some flair by Richard Stanley, this horror/road movie hybrid is weirder than his previous Hardware, and shows a greater sensitivity for directing actors, but it nevertheless lacks the energy and drive of the earlier work. This presages Victor Salva's more conventional Jeepers Creepers series but I prefer Salva's suspenseful & gory B-movie folk tales to Stanley's somnolent mythopoetics.

Great setting and visually fantastic, but both the villain and the detective who's after him are played by exceptionally dull actors (the former is the guy who took over from Peter Weller in Robocop 3). Partially watched in order to process The Island of Dr. Moreau years later.

There's a lot of bleak beauty on display, which is generally the hardest sort of beauty to convey. I assume this is inspired by Tommy-Ray from The Great and Secret Show by Clive Barker, but that might be because it's one of four instances when I can say, "You know the book was better." Dr. Suess significantly aided that number.

Stanley is clearly a talented visual stylist. There are tons of cool shots using colour and framing very creatively, and the Namibia setting is memorable. I also like this kind of mysterious pagan mythology in horror films. The story, however, is largely uninteresting, and the acting is utterly dull. There's an attempt at political subtext but it's not explained clearly enough to the uninitiated and it doesn't seem to go anywhere. Some very cool visuals, but that's about it.

Playful in a way like Wild at Heart and Natural Born Killers and stuff like that, but pretty meh...

This had style and interesting visuals but this was a two-hour incoherent slog, lacking any kind of energy.

I don't see why people hold this film in such high regard. It was ok at best.

just watched south african movie "dust devil" about a demonic road travelling serial killer. really long and boring. good parts but WAAAAAY too much boring filler. head shot though, that was fucking sweet. real juicy. with a twitching body after. very nice. overal though, "yaawwn" i dont need it to be action pase, but when its just mundane filler with no need, its not buildup, its just jibberish. long, overdrawn jibberish. also south africa looks a lot like nevada.

Zakes Makae was born in turbulent times, 1934 Johanesburg. As a youth he was jailed several times for petty crimes but eventually found his way as an actor. In 1960, a play starring and in part created by Makae, The Blood Knot caused a scandal in South Africa, with its plot involving brothers of a different hue, the first time a white actor and a black actor shared the stage. Makae, a fine actor with a rich history, gives what I view to be one of the best performances captured onscreen in Richar

Blah movie. The most noteworthy thing about it is that it wastes Marianne Sagebrecht in a nothing supporting role
