The fights are good, the rest not so much though

Pretty awesomely silly and nonsensical with sweet choreography. Came on a double feature disc with another movie we were actually looking for and ended up liking it better.

Typical example of a kung fu comedy complete with a schizophrenic plot and uneven characters. The movie really doesn't get started until maybe halfway through and never really knows what it's going for. Despite this Donnie Yen performs admirably and really shows off his talents and every fight scene, despite a few minor flaws, are a joy to behold. Possibly only for Donnie Yen fans as there are better out there.

Feels sort of slapped together from spare parts rather than one cohesive whole. See 'Shaolin Drunkard' instead.

Despite a more than confusing start, it really came together in the last half hour. There is a firm grasp of character and character development but really, it is all let down by the ending which was not at all what I had imagined. The constant switch between slapstick comedy and deeply serious drama is a bit jarring but at least it is held together by some amazing fighting sequences. It is a very credible debut for Donnie Yen, despite being forced to play such a schizophrenic lead character.
