I love Rik Mayall, I am very fond of Phoebe Cates. However, I loathe this on practically every level.

Charles plot tanks this hard, a business whatever trying adult suddenly being reunited with their imaginary friend is strong enough to carry this to 90 minutes - a weird much older husband divorce plot of a barely there character SUCKS. Takes what should be a maybe not for kids kid movie and gives it the pacing of an adult drama, yuck. If this movie was brave they would've had Rik also play the father. Redo this movie in 1998 but much better and cast Trey Parker as Fred.

Kept in the parameter of the zeitgeist by those who can't keep Fast Times Cates out of their heads and who love vomit and booger jokes. The Venn diagram overlap is surprisingly large.

There is a neat concept for a kids' movie here, but the execution is anything but great. The script isn't funny and the magical title character is bereft of even a shred of charm or whimsy, played by Mayall in the most irritating fashion possible. There's far too much misplaced profanity and adult humour, and ultimately no positive message for children to take away either.

The movie and premise is cute but whenever I see Phoebe Cates all I see is her taking off her red bikini top.

The movie industry should've used Mayall to make a Lord Flashheart biopic. I'd have watched it.

Who is this movie for? As a piece on mental health and childhood trauma, I'm not sure it's the most effective since Phoebe Cates seemingly had a normal life before her divorce. As a "responsible" adult I can't appreciate Mayall's wacky antics since they always seem to punch down or pick on undeserving people. Marsha Mason outshone Cates, mostly because of those hideous outfits and hairstyles Cates has. What's the friend's excuse for his childish behavior? Fav scene: the other imaginary friends.

Hiding inside this ridiculous shell is a pretty smart script about childhood trauma and how it can affect adult relationships. I enjoyed Mayall's antics and found the climax and resolution strangely moving. Bunch of haters here! ;)

There's an interesting feminist reading of this film to be made. However, the surrounding film is uncomfortable and grating. Fred certainly enjoyed looking up women's skirts.

Phoebe Cates marathon - movie 2: A decent look at debilitating mental illness, as expressed by imaginary friends. There's this one scene where Carrie Fisher explodes in front of everyone and tries to kill an invisible Drop Dead Fred. Is she acting? Is she having a real mental fit? We just don't know.

Good flippity God, is this film awful, not to mention misguided. None of its characters are charming or likable, their mental health is in serious disarray throughout, and the whole thing is so ugly, it's just unbearably unpleasant to watch.

A fairly entertaining film when I first saw it at age 8. I highly doubt that it'd be much of a movie by today's standards of entertaining children.

Weirdly appealing to children... at least it was for me. It gets points for nostalgia value, but I have a feeling that watching it today might make me feel vaguely ill.

It has an interesting premise, but the writing never lets it get to any really rewarding moments, and most of the humor does not hold up well. Fred is a psychopath that essentially mentally tortures the main character, and by doing this that somehow allows her to realize she needs to leave her husband and stand up to her strict mean mom.

Gets minimal props for being a wild swing for the fences in the BEETLEJUICE vein, but neither the writing nor direction are consistent (or clever) enough to realise... whatever the goal was here. Cates and Mayall each seems to be performing in different movies, with Cates’ mousy, down-trodden heroine obliterated by Mayall’s thunderous, unrestrained dervish. A loud, clanging and vulgar experience; oddly enough, Matheson as the blithely smarmy husband is the most endearing member of the cast.

Completely infantile and mostly disgusting, but so much fun. A celebration of the imagination and the always lurking potential for adults to deny this to those they are socially sanctioned to watch over. Mayall and Cates are both very good - Drop Dead Fred is Rick Mayall just as Orson Welles is Falstaff - but it's Ron Eldard as Mickey that is a joy to watch as man reconnects with his youth (the lunch scene with Cates is both hilarious and poignant).
