There is so much potential in this concept, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired. Any time a random evil government plot shows up in a movie like this, it's pretty clear they didn't know what to do with the cool idea they had. I'd love to see Netflix adapt this as a series, because there's still so many unique things you could do with the idea. Just call it Dream Cops and have fun with it.

With a stellar cast, Dreamscape is a crazy mix of horror and government paranoia. While everything in the dream sequences are quite entertaining, the government thriller aspect is fairly ordinary. And, once again, David Patrick Kelly is a blast. Even as a stop motion snake he steals the show.

Great acting from Christopher Plummer and Max von Sydow. Dennis Quaid was adequate but a little full of himself. Kate Capshaw is gorgeous and seems sweet. David Kelly does a good job of portraying yet another unbalanced psycho. The plot is OK, but there are lots of holes. Some of the SFX was lame, especially the monsters. Music is dated. The ending was too predictable and felt rushed. But, overall it was fun to watch, but it could have used a little more imagination.

I kept thinking how cool this film would have been if David Cronenberg directed it. Very interesting premise lacks any artistry and relies solely on cheesy imagery. Quaid is awesome in cool-guy-who-doesn't-give-a-shit role.

Sydow and Plummer in an 80s flick with sci-du elements, and yet, against all odds, I didn't love it. The setup is decent enough but the dream sequences don't deliver.

Aggressively handsome Quaid gets all up in peoples faces in this weirdo psychological misfire. Everyone is a creep and its all very questionable. You'll spend the entire film waiting for the shoe to drop only to realise the writers are actually just awful. In two schlocky sequences it does what you expect and hope for based on the sham poster art (credit to the underused FX dept.), but the rest is just mindless cold war bunkum. A shame - had it gone all-in on the premise it could have been cool.

The grandfather of Inception. Lots of 80ness and lots of Dennis Quaid bare chested.

The definition of a cool 80s movie. Unfortunately both the high concept idea and the stellar cast is somewhat underused. Nonetheless, it's such a wild mix of genres that just speeds forward and ends up being very enjoyable.

Well done but I don't really care for dream sequence movies. Quaid passes for Harrison Ford. Fav scene: kid axing the snake.

The lion's share of Dreamscape's budget seems to have gone on the cast, and the performances provide almost enough gravitas to bring this one over the line. There's a half-decent idea deep within, and my attention was held for much longer than I'd anticipated, but the keyword here is 'confused', with a crazy mixture of genres and tones suggesting nobody really knew which direction to take things in. The particularly muddled nightmare finale, with lots of shoddy stop-motion, seals its fate.

Quite good. The only weak link is the Quaid/Capshaw relationship, because it kind of seems like they're both just being sarcastic at each other most of the time. The premise is fun, the performances are all at least decent, and the dream sequences are a blast. The main character's motivations and behavior don't seem terribly consistent, but I'm willing to forgive that, what with the Snake Man, nuclear explosions, zombies, and glowing nunchucks.

I actually kind of enjoyed this sci fi thriller. I first saw it when I was 12 or so (which was probably a little early) so there may be some nostalgia involved. On rewatch I didn't care for Capshaw but anything with Walken, Plummer and von Sydow can't be all bad.

looking for the 80's prequel to Inception? Then look no further. Dated in a way some will find charming, others cheesy. And terrible special effects, even for its day I imagine. Dennis Quaid reminds me of a young Harrison Ford here, and Christopher Plummer makes an enjoyable, if cliche villain.

Full of 80's cliche music, and dated special effects--both of which could have been forgiven had the writing been done well enough, but it wasn't. Had some good names, and intriguing sets, but nothing to actually merit watching it.

Max von Sydow seemed to be in desperate need of money in the 80s. Or he just forgot how to read. idk but this is pretty pathetic.
