The best silent comedies go beyond plain farce or slapstick and possess a cleverness which makes the viewer think and laugh. The best Chaplin and Keaton films did this. Dr Plonk's postmodern take on the genre occasionally sets a toe in this territory, but usually returns quickly to wacky physical comedy, which is a slight shame. There are some good moments but really it's not much more than a silly farce with actors running in circles, tripping over backwards, and a cute dog stealing the show.
