Bleak and believable crime-family-drama that also sports some pitch black humor at times. While the characters are all terrible people they are fascinating to watch. The sense of realism about the whole thing makes the violence, when it comes, pretty uncomfortable. Maybe becomes a bit repetitive towards the end, but all in all this was a pretty engaging film with a stellar cast and a spot-on atmosphere.

It's really good, this one. Wikipedia wants me to think it's a crime film but I remember seeing a brilliant mix of family drama and black comedy. It ranges from drama and suspense we saw in 'The Sopranos' to brutal comedy we enjoyed in 'Man Bites Dog'. I also absolutely adored the soundtrack

The Hills are really funny, and the whole idea of a mundane domestic unit inexplicably having to deal with gang assassinations and such is pretty great, even if it doesn't always track (some absolute clunking plot developments). The kind of movie that would make Scorcese beg for a wide.

More family romance than crime drama, as, to be honest, the criminal acts are just a bit unbelievable to be acting as realism rather than symbolism. Nevertheless, the claustrophic focus of the house and the relationships were excellently played, together with enough breaking of taboos to make this provocative and engaging.

A menacing kitchen sink drama. If you can overlook the unlikely lack of visits from the Police it's grimly entertaining. Bleakly English & far superior to the usual 'Lock Stock...' mockney crap

I'm a huge mark for Ben Wheatley as it is, and his debut feature suffers from maybe not having as strong a storyline as his other work but it's still a highly original take on the British Gangster film - nice and intimate, and Julia Deakin is actually fucking scary in it! I also really liked the hyper-naturalistic acting and setting - I felt like I was eavesdropping much more than I felt like a legitimate audience member. Also really funny and I learned to roll an L from this!

Cleverly (and stylishly) done but some performances are uneven and the story lacks surprises. A more authentic English feel than the usual inner city gangster flicks.

A kind of blackly comic counterpoint to Animal Kingdom, this has a terrifyingly unpredictable brutality in the most domestic of settings. The cast give great naturalistic performances, the camerawork is excellent and the filmmaking elevates it above just a genre exercise. Lovely soundtrack too.

"Ben Wheatley's Down Terrace follows up a strong first half with a rather less productive second act." - Andrew Schenker

Dark, dark comedy with plenty of witty back-and-forth and lots of violence. The mise-en-scene is stylish and engaging, and I was shocked to learn it was shot in only eight days.
