The Rob Schneider Project - day 6. A grueling day for our science team as Rob had more screentime and was mostly yelling or being a general asshat. The movie as a whole was incredibly boring but never offensive, though the team complained about dark dreams for days after the screening. Something about being trapped in a submarine with a bunch of unfunny humanoids, while a Cthulhu-like Schneider was crushing the craft. Chilling stuff. Schneider-annoyance factor: 7

Saw this as the first flick of a double bill at the drive-in. It was painful to sit through to get to the flick I wanted to see. Years later, I can't recall what the flick I wanted to see that night was, but I remember how fucking awful this movie is.

Schneider quest, film 6: A really dull and unfunny film that's more a drama than comedy. Drained some of my life-joy out of me, now I'm depressed. It's ok though, I knew what was going to happen by starting the Schneider quest. Never expected it to come this soon.. Oh well.. At least Schneider has some irritating and humongously stupid facial expressions

Not sure if this was intended as a deliberate not-quite-comic aping of CRIMSON TIDE, but its attempt to marry a very mild, laid back version of POLICE ACADEMY shenanigans with a story designed to develop genuine tension is an uncomfortable, unsuccessful combination because in its efforts to satisfy both, it satisfies neither, resulting in a feeling of sleepy disinterest. Performers are adequate, if missing the colour that made PA memorable; Grammar is as always a solid and reliable lead.

Rob Schneider is a submarine! And he's about to find out, being a submarine isn't all it's cracked up to be! Down Periscope, rated PG-13.

a definately watchable movie, but i've always had a thing for military comedies so it's no surprise that i enjoyed this. it's not anywhere near as good as some of the other military comedies out there though.

A good little comedy that sort of got passed over. It's pretty simple, but effectively funny. The plot isn't insulting, and the jokes are sophomoric but fun. Thumbs up.

Kelsey Grammar works with what he has in this screwball comedy, and he does a good enough job to make it work.

A terrible satire that comes off as b-tier underwater Top Gun. Surprisingly boring, and totally unfunny, the film becomes destined for doom the exact moment Rob Schneider opens his stupid annoying mouth. Can’t believe it took an entire hour before the characters kicked him out of the film for being too annoying. Nothing was at stake in this film, hero got a promotion and villain had his promotion blocked after a war game exercise. Bruh. Funniest moment was the end credits village people spoof.

Many extra points for the satisfying silly factor, also I had forgotten just how hot Lauren Holly was in 1996. The movie is improbable, unlikely and really quite silly. But I was able to enjoy it nevertheless. It has a good cast. It's not particularly good, interesting or clever but entertaining enough to pass the time.

I have to admit to loving this movie. Everything about it was fantastic from start to finish. Great cast, great acting, and it was funny. What more can you ask for from a movie?

Clever and funny, but if you weren't in the Navy you probably won't get a lot of the humor.

Has Kelsey Grammer or Rob Schneider ever had a good film role? It had potential for about five minutes before the true motive of this film became apparent; Ward wanted this to be the first of a series with Dodge and his offbeat crew. However, seeing as Down Periscope is vastly unfunny and does not have any endearing characters besides Lauren Holly's cleavage, it failed miserably. I mean, when the most gratifying scene in a movie is when the co-star is kicked out indefinitely, something is wrong.

Quirky almost ludicrous story, but its a goofy comedy that delivers where its supposed to. Buckets and buckets of laughs. Buckman getting yelled at cracks me up every time.

All the submarine stereotypes, but this time with humor! It really fails to accomplish... whatever it was trying to accomplish.

It's nowhere near the worst stupid comedy but I can't offer any more praise of the film than that. A good portion of the jokes simply aren't very funny at all which really kills the experience for me. By the time it finished I felt like I had watched Airplane! 3: Submarine! just without all the laughing.

Predictable plot, stale acting, bad physical humor. I could keep adding to the list, but what's the point? Don't bother watching, you won't laugh at anything other than the guy who can make dolphin and whale sounds.
