Down Low

Messy but amusing with a few original touches.

Incredibly messy, and often aimless. I have to give credit though, as it’s a gay film with a different plot for once, and one of the few (if any) that’s a dark comedy.

Down Low hits as many emotional notes as it does funny ones, both with land around 65% of the time. Quinto is flawless. Cage's character is obnoxious, irritating and over-indulged, and given he co-wrote the film I can't help but wonder if Cage put a bit of his own personality into it. The plot is a fairly standard tale of indulgence, murder, cover-up and increasingly silly hijinks. The characters are interesting enough to make it watchable. More sassy than pithy, sadly.
