Double Wedding

(rating lowered on 2nd watch but much of text still applies) This is better than it should be. Very generic in the she ...... him till she ..... him plot with a meant to deceive (no chance but that was the way these things went back then) sideplot. However, well enough played by all cast, becoming genuinely funny once Powell and Loy are linked. Even in their solo scenes they are both good value here. If you let yourself accept the movie values of the time this is not bad, generic but not bad.

The 7th William Powell & Myrna Loy! Loy a structured control freak. Powell a free spirit bum. According to MGM that's a match made in heaven. Sadly the sparkle between Powell & Loy doesn't shine all that bright in this attempt. Probable hurt by Powell's real life fiancé Jean Harlow dying while this movie was in production, which was something that affected them both. But it's at times a high energy comedy with a nice little wedding brawl!

Painfully sexist and patriarchical! And yet, humor - especially when delivered by the dynamite team of Loy and Powell - manages to punch through. I'm fairly sure their chemistry could melt tungsten steel and replenish the ozone layer. (Jessie Ralph also turns in a solid performance, and Florence Rice gets some good moments.)
