Better than his Batman movies and about 2 hours shorter!

Seeing this early film by Nolan really illuminates what goes on in his mind. He has a knack for complex, intriguing ideas and an instinct for atmosphere. Only here, these things are only slightly hinted at. The movie just isn't very good. Poor effects, cheesy, and predictable. I guess every great director has to start somewhere.

I'm a huge, huge Nolan fan, but nothing about this indicates the vast reservoir of talent that the future director of Memento, Inception, and the new Batman franchise would reveal himself to have.

Well, you can sort of see that it's Nolan because it's an Inception-like thing-within-a-thing, and it's technically proficient, but also very tacky.

An early show of the kind of ideas that grown-up Nolan would use in his films. But it feels just as student film-y as most others I've seen and there's little hint of the filmmaking prowess he would develop, other than perhaps atmospherically.

Doodlebug was some kind of a sequel for Tarantella he made some 8 years earlier. Again a lot of eye movements. The story was extremely short, and you can easily guess the ending coming. Better acting than in Tarantella though. Doodlebug aka Maybug aka Maybeetle aka the common cockchafer.

A not-bad student effort from Nolan is too short to develop properly (and conversely has no chance of wearing out its welcome) - the chief asset it has is a genuinely unsettling mood and atmosphere, even if the "twist" is a bit of a "who cares?" Still interesting for who its director would become.

Thought that it showed what Nolan would go on to do really well. Its low budget nature made some of the effects a little weird but at the same time there was an endearing quality to it. I loved the music, thought the story was interesting for as long as it lasted. I didn't expect to like this as much as I did.

I'll grade this one on a curve. Film students usually produce self-important, pretentious work and this is not completely that, but still mostly that. It's devoid of any meaningful thought and doesn't really showcase Nolan's future other than complexities for the sake of being complex.

Christopher Nolan just loves special effects, that much is clear. But in his early years as a director, the narrative element greatly suffered because of it.

A pretty pointless short from a young Christopher Nolan, but at less than three minutes at least your patience isn't tried. Having crazily hunted down annoying flies in the past I found amusement in relating to the guy somewhat. The 'twist' seems very outdated though, even for '97.

It's a man squashing a man who is squashing a man. Seems that many of Nolan's films take place within something that takes place with something that takes place within somewhere. Unremarkable.

It's too short and limited to be truly great, but for what it is it's certainly a good early effort by a man who would go on to become one of the best directors in the history of movies. Interestingly, in "Doodlebug" he already displays a preference for plot twists of the mindfuck sort. The unsettling atmosphere is well done and, even though the effects are a little janky, the finale is food for thought as it reveals the protagonist as his own worst enemy and what bugs him grows and engulfs him.

An undeniably studenty short, with lamentable acting and a trying-too-hard approach to the look and sound. Seems pretty useless, but the corny conceit of the ending should at least put a smile on your face. So early that it oughn't to be taken seriously as part of Nolan's professional oeuvre.
