A messy, slapped-together film with some story-strands and characters that don't add up ("Hello, nice to meet you, I'm Rooney Mara and I'm instantly in love with you, now let me give you a bath"), but it's hard not to be put in a joyful mood with this (seemingly abbreviated) story of overcoming alcoholism that keeps itself entertaining with a solid ensemble of characters that stop this from entering sappy territory. Now, excuse me while I have a drink.

Great performances (Hill, Phoenix, and Black all have truly fantastic moments) but overall an uneven, slapdash film.

A unique story told creatively, but the film fails to engage deeply due to its constantly leaping time and never-quite likable leads. The final acts sees a series of exceptional scenes, however: both Jack Black (who surprises) and Jonah Hill are magnificent here, and the whole film is consistently strong, if not profound.

Combines the accessible emotional punch of a mainstream drama (without getting sappy) with the unconventionality and boldness of an indie; the wonderfully edited timeline-jumping of the first half creates a uniquely compelling character set-up while the longer dialogues to follow solidify and bring to a tear-jerking climax the powerful yet nuanced redemption arc (see the return to those adorable skate kids). Phoenix is expectedly great, but it's Hill who's simply magnetic in a supporting role.

A biopic that is consistently sweet and quintessentially human. It made me smile more than anything I've seen lately. I found it to be remarkably hopeful, hilarious, and dense with unassuming wisdom.

Another film about self-destructive behavior, and an AA training film for members and sponsors. Not much for the rest of us until the very end. Jonah Hill is excellent. Best part was the title.

Strikes me with heavy principles of what it can mean to be human. It's capable of being quite funny and sincere without over the top melodrama. I simply enjoy and feel comfort sitting through biopics as such.

Have patience with this one. Lots of parallels to Drugstore Cowboy and Jesus' Son (Jack Black. car crashes, drug addiction, rehabilitation, spirituality, surrealism). Has a strong Hallmark-film vibe. This one doesn't feel like a Gus Van Sant film, as it is his most fast-passed film (sorta), and utilizes both new and traditional filming techniques. Phoenix and Black are Oscar-worthy. This is a good film, aside from the score. One of the few Van Sant films you might rather want to watch sober.

It's fine with a good performance by everyone, especially Phoenix and Hill... but Black put in really underrated work for the limited time he was in it. Some of it was hokey, some scenes were unnecessarily repetitive, there was some pretty good humour. The cartoons were great, once it leaned more into that it became a much better movie. I didn't know who Callahan is so I can't speak to accuracy, but this does seem slight compared to what I imagine he experienced.

As always Phoenix performs perfectly, making the movie feel very authentic. He does sell the struggle with alcoholism, but seems surprisingly little bothered by his handicap. The retro setting translated well for me. However, I felt that some scenes were too repetitive ("I know three things about my mother..."), and as I didn't know Callahan before this bio pic, I may have lacked a certain passion to begin with.

I don't know about the real John Callahan but he seems more edgy than the rather annoying (and oh so indie warm) portrayal by Joaquin Phoenix. The actual cartoons, and Jonah Hill, are the only interesting aspects.

I think the performances elevate it beyond the base material...to a degree. It was a fine watch if terribly typical.

Great performances, At least by the actors. The story is not very interesting. Van Sant is not a very good director, never really has been. One great film (Good Will Hunting) and a bunch of crap ever since (Gerry, Paranoid Park? Really? Awful!).

Phoenix's hair does not seem natural at all! The movie has some depth issues at times and some really weird zoom-ins but on the principal level I liked it very much. The self loathing, self pity, drowning the sorrow, facing your fears, forgiving ones you never thought you could... and forgiving yourself. For me the movie itself is really nothing special but it did remind me of that special feeling about... the cosmic giggle.

Far too conventional to actually transcend its sometimes boring and schematic script -- a series of conversations interwined by flashbacks detailing his steps towards a better life with himself and others -- but Gus is so good with the cast that this feels incredibly light, easygoing and even inspiring. Jack Black is just awesome here. Digital photography also looks neat, as Gus employs some 70s cam tricks to elevate the bio material.

This was quite nice. As he's proven several times by now, Gus Van Sant is really good at capturing humanity in a poetic and wonderfully simple way. Occasionally, it was a little too saccharine, but for the most part, it felt honest, if contrived. I enjoyed the structure of the story. Joaquin Phoenix and Jonah Hill were both really good. Not extraordinary, but very solid overall.

decent direction, in general, a technically decent work; average screenplay with a few great moments; the love story with Annu looks forced; it feels like it's longer than it could be; it sometimes feels like the story tries to make Callahan not look bad, his critics are portrayed just as some salty moralists; it's a correct work with almost nothing special about it.

Conventional in every respect, and quite sentimental. Van Sant's sure-handed writing and directing and Phoenix's sincere performance, as well as glimpses of John Callahan's immensely clever cartoons, help the movie shine despite its shortcomings. As it nears the end it gets just a little bit too mushy for its own good.

A movie about a cartoonist from Oregon, I think there some good takeaways from this movie, though the movie does drag on and its a bit depressing. I definitely recommend this movie especially if you are from the Portland area.

Joaquin Phoenix was pretty good in what seemed like a cautionary tale about alcoholism. It liked how they brought the 12 step program into focus and showed how it worked for him. This is the best performance I've seen from Jonah Hill to date. Jack Black seemed not as good by comparison. At first, I tettered between liking it and not, but ended up finding much to appreciate. Worth watching. Also, the women in this were amazing.
